It's the End of the World As We Know It

It's the end of the world as we know it...
And I feel fine...

- REM

About a month ago, I posted a link in the comments of a daily blog post to a site that describes various possible ways that earth (or in some cases human life upon it) could be destroyed. One of those scenarios described a black hole being created in a laboratory and then "getting loose" and slowly consuming the planet.

I was reminded of this when I read this story about a lawsuit against the newest CERN particle collider in Switzerland:

Preserve, protect and defend

The DoJ declassified a memo from 2003. Yes. another one. Many more are still missing... but if this is an indicator of what we have yet to see... wow...
The memo, written by John Yoo, then a key architect of legal policy in the wake of 9/11, dismisses several legal impediments to the use of extreme techniques.

Yoo was long a proponent of an aggressive approach in the war against terrorism and a believer in executive branch authority. But the memo was withdrawn as formal government policy less than a year after it was written.

In the March 14, 2003 memo, Yoo says the Constitution was not in play with regard to the interrogations because the Fifth Amendment (which provides for due process of law) and the Eighth Amendment (which prevents the government from employing cruel and usual punishment) does "not extend to alien enemy combatants held abroad.":

The memo goes on to explain that federal criminal statutes regarding assault and other crimes against the body don't apply to authorized military interrogations overseas and that statutes that do apply to the conduct of U.S. officials abroad pertaining to war crimes and torture establish a limited obligation on the part of interrogators to refrain from bodily harm.
But this is the real kicker...

Good Morning.

Today is our 1,840th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do...with the increasing casualties from the warron terra, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4011
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 3872
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3550
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3152
Since Election (1/31/05): 2573

Other Coalition Troops: 309
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 491

We find this morning's cost of war passing through: $507,453,610,000.00

Do go and watch it for a minute. I timed it just now, and our war debt seems to be increasing by $10,000 every four seconds or so. Think of your annual salary, then do the math. It's sickening.

What do Basra, Cambodia, and Atlanta have in common? It's hard to imagine a more diverse selection of locales. They all share one critical problem, however: lack of clean fresh water. I've detailed Atlanta's water problems in this space previously. The solutions have varied from the insane (Sonny Perdue holding a prayer vigil on the state capital steps) to the merely absurd (state legislators trying to get the northern state boundry redrawn to allow access to water in Tennesee).

The current tact is to "allow" TN to keep the land, but to still allow access to the water:

Judge not, lest ye be........ you know!

There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance -- that principle is contempt prior to investigation. Herbert Spencer

Above is a quote I try to live by in order to keep an open mind. How I wish others would live by it as well. Especially neo-cons and media pundits!

I am sick to death of this stupid "God Damn America" business! The press will just not leave it alone and I'm quite tired of hearing about it. Especially since they refuse to hold McCain accountable for his "Sunni/Shia" confusion and any Pastors he's been courting who have said horrible things. Some that could incite violence.

So, today I would like to look in depth at Rev. Wrights sermon. In fact, here it is, in text format and I invite you to sit back and have a look at the controversial sermon -with an open mind. I personally, find it inspirational, even though there are a few things that I do not agree with, and yes, a few things that make me cringe.

The Rev. Wright is a powerful orator, going from love to anger and back to love, so please keep that in mind while reading it. I left it without the annoying quote blocks:

Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/29/2008 11:57:17

Good Morning!

As the earth moves inexorably along its orbital path, we move another day into tha magic time called "spring". It's lighter, more birds are chirping...but it's still frickin' cold out!

Enough of that now.

Over the past few weeks, both Democratic candidates have been increasingly sniping at each other, to the detriment of the party and the process. As was pointed out in this space yesterday, the tone of the campaign is such that many hardcore democrats are actually thinking about voting for a third term of Bush if "their" candidate doesn't get the nomination.

I'm not here today to tell you all to vote Libertarian. Third parties may not be the answer either, and there's an interesting discussion today, both pro and con, whether the Libertarian Party could or should continue. I'll not post the whole thing..but do go and check the source material if you're interested...

[Ed. Note: Making political change is much debated, yet political action might be characterized as similar to the Canadian ice game of curling, which combines aspects of bowling, bocce and shuffleboard. The curling stone – a kind of oversized hockey puck – is slid on the ice, and the players take brooms and sweep around the stone, but never actually touch it. They merely influence the stone, hoping to help it stop as close to the desired spot as possible.

Even if one agrees on a political destination, or even just a direction, means are just as important as ends in any game, including politics. Two noted strategists in libertarian circles – Carl Milsted and Brian Holtz – offer different takes on the question of whether a libertarian third party is futile and counterproductive.]

It's been hard to escape all of the Clinton -vs- Obama hype lately. Hillary's underhanded tactics are given all of the proper outrage - repeatedly... The video of Rev. Wright is discussed ad nauseum. Everyone keeps wondering aloud if all of this will destroy the Democratic party. There certainly seem to be a fair number of Democrats that say they'll vote for McCain if their desired candidate is not the one nominated.

Oh really?... Are you sure?.... Perhaps it's time to really take a close look at McCain and what we'll be getting if he's elected this fall.

Finally, the YouTubes went back online, so, here is Steph from last night - plus a few new audicons for us all to play with...

Seems that Dan wasn't so happy with the "pimp" comment and put our dear Stephie in the penalty box. I thought it was funny! But, at least Dan was nice at the end, and MSNBC won't act like Fox "News."

Well, it's crazy late and thankfully I don't have to answer a 3 AM call - unless it's of the "booty" persuasion

So with that,
