Damage Accomplished.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/10/2010 12:49:25

As of this morning, Terry Jones has said he would not be going through with his "International Quran Burning Event" -- To which I musk ask: Does it even matter anymore? Hasn't the damage been done? From Reuters:
Thousands of Afghans protested against the United States in the northeast on Friday, the largest demonstration since a small U.S. church said it planned to burn copies of the Koran, an Afghan official said.

After special Eid prayers to mark the end of Ramadan, the crowd, estimated by a governor's spokesman at 10,000, poured into the streets from mosques in Badakhshan province chanting anti-U.S. slogans.

There were no signs of disturbance, the spokesman said.
There is also this sad news. I person has died.
A protester against a US pastor's plans to burn copies of the Qur'an is reported to have been shot dead in northern Afghanistan after crowds attacked a Nato base.

The man was killed in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, a provincial government spokesman said. It happened when thousands of worshippers poured onto the streets after Eid prayers had been held in nearby mosques.

The crowd was estimated at around 10,000 people. Some had hurled stones at a Nato base run by Germans, and the protester was shot when troops inside opened fire, Amin Sohail said.

Terry Jones accomplished what he set out to do -- spread anger and hate. As BobR wrote in yesterday's blog: Words can kill -- and now a person is dead.

Tomorrow is September 11, and I for one find this now deadly hate stunt more disrespectful and insensitive to those that died 9 years ago than any proposed 'community center'.

Imagine for a moment if an Imam decided to have an International "Bible Burning Event" ? How far are we going to take the religious intolerance in this nation? One religious leader is attempting to take steps to show more tolerance, and I for one welcome this.
A proposed Islamic community center near ground zero will include separate prayer spaces for Muslims, Christians, Jews and people of other faiths, the imam behind plans for the facility wrote in an opinion piece published online Tuesday.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf wrote in The New York Times that the attention surrounding the plans for the $100 million community center just blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 attacks "reflects the degree to which people care about the very American values under debate: recognition of the rights of others, tolerance and freedom of worship."
This is what I expect from religious leaders of ALL faiths in this nation. This is what I want for my country. Tolerance, acceptance and love. This is the exact opposite of what Terry Jones accomplished, and the media pushed.

All I know is that I am glad Terry Jones likes fire so much. It may very well come in handy for him in the future.

and
Raine

There haven't been bits all week - they don't do that on vacation weeks. Although I may have found a loophole where I can listen online again. I'm ascared to try it, though.

I'm sure that most of you outside New England wish ill upon our football team. You did hear about the car accident yesterday involving Tom Brady?

The guy that crashed into him is a piece of work.

You can commit any crime you want, as long as you're driving a car you'll get away with it.

And a curious thing happened to Scott Brown (R-MA). He might not be a toolish Republican after all.

I think he bends whichever way the wind blows. I have no idea what this person stands for beyond whatever will get him re-elected.

Also posted at UNN...

9/11 has become a day of hate

The view from Germany...

Sept. 11 used to be a day when America came together -- party politics took a backseat to reconciliation. Not so this year. From the Muslim prayer room at ground zero to Koran burnings in Florida to a certain gathering in Alaska, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks this year threatens to become a day of hate.

The open letter was born of a desire simply to mourn. The signatures on the letter included the father of Jonathan Ielpi, a firefighter who died in the ruins of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001; the sister-in-law of Myra Aronson, who was on American Airlines Flight 11 when it was hijacked en route from Boston to Los Angeles and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center; and Mary Ellen Salamone, wife of John Salamone, who was at work on the 104th floor of the North Tower at the time of the terrorist assault.

Together with many others also mourning loved ones, they wrote: "To hold rallies of any nature on Sept. 11 would be inappropriate and disrespectful to all of us who see 9/11 as a day outside of politics."

The letter was targeted at activists who want to use this Sept. 11 of all days, to protest the planned construction of a mosque -- actually an Islamic cultural center with a prayer room -- near Ground Zero.

For those that care -- Lou Reed did NOT deny Susan Boyle the pleasure of singing Perfect Day.

People REALLY need to pay attention to rights and usage rules. Keerist. I am really getting sick of the stupidity in this world.

Two things:

1) I don't think a District Court has the authority to do this, but I could be wrong.

2) Without DADT, do we revert back to the legal standing that existed prior to that? If so, then things are on even worse footing (DATD was an improvement over the rules in place at the time).

as to 1) I think the district court can do this, just as the District Court did in CAlifornia regarding prop 8.

As to 2) This is a serious and valid point to raise. I think things are going to get seriously murky. IT is for this reason I believe that we need Congress to pass a law repealing DADT once and for all.

1) The District court could do it for Prop 8 because that was a state issue, and the court haa jurisdiction over the state. I don't think a district court has jurisdiction over the nation.
