Let's get this week going...
Author: Raine    Date: 01/07/2013 14:02:02

First full week of the New year! What do you have going on?

I'm looking at a few stories, and I swear it's like nothing has changed with this new congress.

Shutting down government, birthrights crap, attacking women, Chuck Hagel is too liberal, evils of John Brennan and other assorted conservative nuttery.

I'll be back.

Raine

Well this is interesting.

Eliot Spitzer, the former New York governor turned progressive television host, said Sunday that his show on Current TV is over.

The announcement comes a few days after Al Jazeera said it was acquiring Current TV. Later this year, the Qatar-owned broadcaster plans to turn the channel into an Americanized version of the international news channel Al Jazeera English.

Mr. Spitzer said he had a “wonderful time” at Current, but emphasized that his relationship was with Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, Current’s co-founders, not with Al Jazeera. “Moving forward, their mission will be different,” he said — more international newscasts, less liberal talk about the news.

Mr. Spitzer’s 8 p.m. program on Current, “Viewpoint,” was the centerpiece of the channel’s fledgling prime-time schedule. He said the time slot would have a new host starting on Monday.

A Current spokeswoman said Sunday that Mr. Spitzer “has chosen to step back from hosting ‘Viewpoint.’ Until further notice the show will be hosted by John Fugelsang.”

yeah, I didn't think they were going to keep any of the programming and to be honest I think Al-J is going to lose all the placements that Current fought to get so they are going to be back to square one.

Wanna know something really messed up?

Traci Lords, from Stuebenville Ohio gave this interview to Larry King in 2003 Traci Lords is 44 years old.

KING: What age did it start, your abuse?

LORDS: Ten.

(CROSSTALK)

KING: And it was your father?

LORDS: No, it was a boy from school, an older boy that I had a crush on. He was 16 and I was 10 years old. I mean, you don't really have a boyfriend when you're 10 years old.
That was 1978. She was still in Ohio. She has an older sister.

Great....chronic peripheral neuropathy.

As the amount of oxaliplatin you take accumulates over several treatments, the risk of a longer-lasting sensory neuropathy in your hands and feet goes up. Initially this may be tingling or a feeling of pins and needles. Some patients may go on to have numbness and find it difficult to do small tasks with their hands like buttoning a shirt. In some cases, neuropathy can cause pain and difficulty with daily life, including walking or balancing.

Oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy usually gets better once the drug is stopped, although some patients will experience an increase in symptoms after treatment ends that then fades.

Oh, and we picked up a copy of an old favorite board game for Three Kings yesterday. Anybody played "LIFE" recently? It's far more complex than I remember, and it seems to have been re-designed by either Mormons or Republicans; it's overrun with babies and lawsuits now. (We had one car limp into retirement with a Duggar amount of children in it, and easily a million dollars changed hands yesterday on the various lawsuits that I don't remember from older versions of the game.)

Good day, folks. It does seem like Al-Jazeera acquired Current because Al-Jazeera English has had difficulty getting distribution in the US because of the whole image as
"the terrorist news network" even though it has wide distribution in other parts of the world but it's not like a lot of people get CNN International, BBC World (although Comcast and Time Warner have begun to ramp that one up), or RT (despite carriage on Time Warner). I could see a lot of providers doing what Time Warner did as soon as the sale was announced and pulling the channel when it changes format. At least, Al-Jazeera ownership hasn't hurt beIn Sport in its efforts to get US distribution and they have benefited in getting the rights to the European Soccer Leagues that previously were on Gol TV.

Really, Mala? Really? Two stories is what you meant to say, right?

Moving forward from my grammar pet peeve, perhaps my loathing is just based on my experience with the Town Center here. There isn't adequate parking despite the joint only being about six or so years old. The traffic is just a nightmare because of the horrible road infrastructure. it is just a terrible, terrible place to go shop. Not to mention the weather issues.

RG3 aggravated his knee injury early in the game, at the time Washington was ahead 14-0. After that point, it was obvious he could not run or throw long, and it got worse as the game went along.

Seattle had gone ahead late in the game. While reaching for a bad snap from center, RG3 twisted his knee and went down in extreme pain (and lost the ball). Seattle scored a few plays later and that was it.

In the view of many, RG3 should have been removed from the game when he first aggravated the injury. Now, pending MRI results, surgery is probably required, and possibly a long (like next season) recuperation.

Blame is being heaped upon Coach Shanahan, for even playing RG3 because it looks like he was never medically cleared to play, or at the least not pulling him when it was obvious he was hurting the team.

Lots of blame also goes to the horrible field conditions, the Seattle kicker injured himself (during warmups I think) and another Seattle player suffered a season ending injury. I heard that they had to paint the field green, it was in such bad shape.

Fark headline ---- RG3 wins the Theismann Trophy.

Hopefully, something will turn up. It gets frustrating doing all those interviews and having nothing come of them. Although have schools in the Chicago area been effected by the push for Charter Schools and any other cuts that might be initiated. And in Indiana, they are probably being effected by GOP cuts.

That field was in WRETCHED condition.

And count me among the many that believe RGIII should have been pulled when the injury was apparent. They could have checked him out, given him some cortisone and possibly had him back in the game after halftime.

They should have NEVER played him in the Eagles game. This is on the coaching staff.

I'm glad we had the bye this week.

Although there was a scintillating college basketball game here - BC almost beat the Wolfpack in the ACC opener.

(I'm happy both ways, BC is my hockey team, so seeeing their basketball counterparts play well was a good thing, and I started watching basketball way back when for the 1983 NCAA title...which the Wolfpack won. Haven't missed a title game since.)

And one month from today is the Beanpot!

Listening to a vintage radio program (Superman, Circa 1947 or so). One of the vintage ads is for defunct "Kellogg's Pep", a Wheaties competitor.

They are pushing a recipe called "Date Bait", which will allegedly "bait" your appetite. (It's just cut-up dates mixed with the cereal.)

I'm sure they did this with complete innocence....because it sure sounds like something else now.

There was a previous recipe where you mix the cereal with "gay" fruit salad....

If the NFL REALLY cared about player safety/health, they'd be going after Dan Snyder until he had a professional (or even high school) quality field installed.

Say, I made my first revenue flight in the resurrected sim last night. Took the ol' Saab 340 from Hanscom up to Portland, ME in a hair under 45 minutes. Frame rates up over 50 now with a couple of scenery tweaks.

Did I mention that I downlodaed the Breitling Connie, and it's a sweetheart? Handles great, sounds good, and the flight envelope is much more realistic than the old "Save a Connie" that I used to fly.

Can't wait to get that one on a long-haul flight.

I guess this is due to NESN showing Liverpool games. YES was supposed to have a deal with Manchester United but nothing ever came of it and it seems like now they show replays of Arsenal games.

Ohio rape case update

Nearly 1,000 people gathered in the small town of Steubenville, Ohio over the weekend to protest the handling of an alleged gang rape where a teenage girl claims she was sexually assaulted by two star football players.

The case has sparked fury both in the rural town and across the country as those involved have effectively been accused by social media, even though police have only arrested two 16-year-old boys who were pictured carrying the alleged victim's limp body on the night of the incident.

The backlash has echoes of the international outrage triggered by the death of 23-year-old Joyti Singh Pandey, who died as a result of the massive injuries sustained during a brutal gang rape at the hands of six men in Delhi, India.

In Ohio, only two teens have been charged- Ma'lik Richmond and Trenton Mays - though many in the close-knit town believe that there is a cover up underway to keep more players from the beloved high school football team from being arrested.

Over the weekend, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said officially that no further suspects would be charged.

feh. If I wanted to watch soccer, I'd support the local team. If I'm going to watch 90 minutes of constant action with very little scoring, I'll take hockey instead.

A short story on racial intolerance

So I was in Walmart today picking up some prescriptions and groceries. I ended up in the 20 items or less lane behind a trio of loverly women pushing a cart full of 12 packs of Pepsi. When they got to the register, they told the cashier they wanted her to honor the 4 for 12 special they had seen in another grocery store's circular.

While she was trying to call a manager to see if they could do this, they cajoled her to go ahead and ring it up because they were "in a hurry". They also told her to "learn to read English". I should probably add that the cashier was Indian.

As they kept bullying her, I was trying to hold back my outrage. They finally paid for their sodas and pushed the cart out, again telling the cashier that she needed to learn English.

It was at this point that I informed the ladies that the three of them bore a striking resemblance to rectal openings, and I did it in one word.

*********************
Postscript: When I got home, I found the circular in question. It said "limit four". Rectal openings.

Rules don't mean a thing when compared to the indifference shown to their MLB holdings.

Maybe if the owners were paying attention, "Chickengate" might never have happened. They took a total "hands off" approach after being engaged in every facet of the operation their first few years. (Remember 2004 and 2007?) It's been downhill every year since then.

That's actually common. Giant/Stop&Shop will honor other supermarket chain's sales prices. It's not uncommon for discount chains and supermarkets.

The uncertainty of whether the circular had the limit disclaimer was about the only thing that kept me from raising holy hell while they were in line. I suppose that's a SOP for grocery stores now, to keep people from doing what these ladies did. In hindsight, I wish I had just blurted out "You know you can't do that at Ingles, what makes you think you can do it here?"

I will also add that after calling them "assholes", I turned to the cashiered and apologized, partially for my obscenity and partially for theirs. She smiled and said "No, no, it's fine." but I think she was thankful that someone at least called them out on their behavior.

You know, Mondo, I don't care if you like the NFL or not. How would you like it if I called you a FIFA fan boy? You yourself said you wore doc martens to work and wanted to head butt people and then lamented that no one responded to that...

If you have something to say, say it. That said if you don't know what you are talking about, try keeping the snark at a minimum -- it's not productive. Some people here like baseball, some like soccer, some football... Some have no interest in sports at all.

Not everyone is into the same things. Just because you like something that others may not be interested in is not a reason to slam a sport. Do I slam European Football? I think not.

It's not cool. It's actually kinda mean.

Considering this about the town:

Steubenville has had a reputation for political corruption. The U.S. Department of Justice alleged that the city and police force had subjected numerous individuals to "excessive force, false arrests, charges, and reports" and had engaged in practices regarding "improper stops, searches, and seizures." The report from the Department also stated that excessive force was levied against individuals who witnessed incidents of police misconduct, and against those who were known critics of the city and its police force. Those individuals were also falsely detained if the city and the police agreed that they were "likely to complain of abuse." It also stated that the officers involved also falsified reports and tampered with official police recorders so that "misconduct would not be recorded."

Over a period of 20 years the city lost, or settled out of court, 48 civil rights lawsuits involving its police force. The city paid out more than $800,000, $400,000 of which was between 1990 and 1996. As a result, the city's police force became the second city in the United States to sign a consent decree with the federal government due to an excessive number of civil rights lawsuits. The decree was signed on September 4, 1997 under the "pattern or practice" provision. Under this agreement, the city agreed to improve the training of its police officers, implement new guidelines and procedures, establish an internal affairs unit, and establish an "early warning system."

Then there is this:
“They are reluctant to sacrifice their college career, their reputation, or their otherwise good standing in whatever community they may be found for fear of being vilified, and certain personal information finding its way on the Internet,” said Walter Madison, an attorney for 16-year-old defendant Ma’Lik Richmond.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, whose office is overseeing the case’s prosecution, said the decision will be up to the judge. He declined to comment on the attorneys’ concerns.

Guess what? I'd like to see those charged come forward and tell people who else was involved. Those two boys KNOW damn well they were not the only ones involved. I am sick of this shit.

We need the truth in this case. This is looking a lot like an effort by a few officials and powerful people to obstruct justice. Everyone who is involved should be charged. I also have to ask why people at the parties did nothing and what it says about the spirit of that community.
