Never Forget

Just over a week ago, we celebrated Labor Day with a 3-day weekend, cookouts, and maybe one last trip to the beach or maybe the neighborhood swimming pool. The day before yesterday, the president spoke about Syria. Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of 9/11. What could these things possibly have in common?
If you ventured outside your house and/or watched anything on TV or surfed in the internet yesterday, you were likely bombarded with two words: Never Forget. Once again the photos of the twin towers burning or videos of them collapsing and that horrible white cloud spreading out like the Angel of Death's wings were plastered across our screens. Some call it tragedy porn. It is wallowing in the emotions we felt at the time, picking at the scars just to remember the blood.
What "never forgot" really means to a lot of people is remember the fear and hatred and desire for vengeance. How many people will never forget the lies that were told to send thousands of young Americans to their deaths in Iraq? We Support the Troops, they say, but they never asked for retribution from those who cooked the intelligence into that deadly stew.
It's only when there's talk of military action in another country that the lies from the previous president and his cabal are remembered. Even with that, the mistrust for this president overpowers the very real facts of the previous administrations deliberate lies. We don't want to get into another mess, but let's not dwell on who created the first one and why, and oh by the way - Support the Troops!™ Never Forget!™

They've forgotten the struggles the unions went through to improve workplace safety, to secure a reasonable work week, and to ensure that employees were treated fairly by management. A 3 day weekend at the beginning of September is a given, as if it just happened on its own and is a birthright for all Americans. The unions and the laws that sprung up around them due to their labor and steadfast resolve created the middle class in America.
Yet propaganda created by the rich have made union a dirty word. We love our teachers and cops and firemen, but hate their unions. We blame the unions for the loss of jobs, while simultaneously giving tax breaks to the rich because they are the "job creators". Except... well... they really aren't creating many jobs. And all that money just just keeps floating uphill to them:

In other news, I'm a bit bemused by my new Committee Chairman. (Pack 205). He had a tough time dealing with last year's Cubmaster...we've had all our meetings and everything is all ready for recruiting kickoff on Monday and our first meeting next week.
He's called me every day this week with something, it's gone kinda like this:
Did we call xyz? Yep, spoke to him yesterday, it's all set.
Don't forget to do "this"! We're ready, another leader is doing that.
Can we get into this place? I"m waiting to hear back; I emailed them last night.
The flyers are all messed up! I talked to Joe at District - he's printing new ones and will even deliver them.
I'm ready!

Good morning, bloggers!!! I hope that everyone is well.
I had a busy day Tuesday, as I had to take a 92-year old friend to the hospital for constipation and chest congestion. It turns out that he had bronchitis and should be getting out today. However, I was at the hospital from 3:30 PM to 2:00 AM, as it took till 12:30 AM to get a room and then I waited until a nurse supervisor could put his valuables way and left the hospital after 2 AM. I grabbed something to eat from Wendy's and got home just before 3 AM.
Yesterday was a quiet day for me. I find myself to be sad and contemplative on each anniversary.
BobR, I fear that many of us have forgotten our history. We are back to Gilded Age conditions economically and we have those who want blood and empire. It is time that we move beyond this as a nation. Perhaps the dispute over Syria will show that Americans can be engaged in complex issues.

In 2005, the same year he faced felony charges for battering a police officer, Zimmerman was subject to a temporary restraining order after his ex-fiancée accused him of striking, shoving and groping her on several occasions. During the duration of the order, Zimmerman was prohibited from owning or purchasing firearms. But after it expired in 2006, he was once again eligible to possess a gun — and obtain a concealed carry permit.
Yep, he is a ticking time bomb.

Don't you just love it when for the past 3 days you shoved all your work aside to take care of an event that a certain manager who decided to change it from an indoor to outdoor so I had to scramble to get 2 bids from rental places (which is difficult when places won't call you back). Then today he tell you something is wrong with a printer you have no clue about so you direct them to the correct person and he still tells you to deal with. THEN he goes and bitches to the person you told him could help him that I don't take care of what he wants.

Anna Neistat, Assistant Director of Programs, Emergencies for Human Rights Watch, has an article in HuffPo about "What Putin Didn't Tell the American People":
There is not a single mention in Putin's article, addressed to the American people, of the egregious crimes committed by the Syrian government and extensively documented by the UN Commission of Inquiry, local and international human rights groups, and numerous journalists: deliberate and indiscriminate killings of tens of thousands of civilians, executions, torture, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests. His op-ed also makes no mention of Russia's ongoing transfer of arms to Assad throughout the past two and a half years.
The Russian president strategically emphasizes the role of Islamic extremists in the Syrian conflict. Yes, many rebel groups have committed abuses and atrocities. Yet Putin fails to mention that it is the Syrian government that is responsible for shooting peaceful protesters (before the conflict even started) and detaining and torturing their leaders -- many of whom remain detained -- and that the continued failure of the international community to respond to atrocities in Syria allows crimes on all sides to continue unaddressed.
Putin's plea to use the United Nations Security Council to resolve the conflict sounds great, until you remember that, from the very start of this conflict, Russia has vetoed or blocked any Security Council action that may bring relief to Syria's civilians or bring perpetrators of abuses in Syria to account.
While Russia's proposal for international monitoring of Syria's chemical weapons is a welcome step, it will do nothing to bring justice to hundreds of victims of the latest attack, let alone to thousands of others, killed by conventional weapons. And when Putin squarely blames the opposition for the August 21 chemical attack -- against all available evidence and without presenting a shred of his own evidence -- one can only wonder why Russia remains so vehemently opposed to referring Syria to the International Criminal Court, an action that would be fully in line with international law, which Putin seems so keen to uphold in his op-ed, and would enable an investigation into abuses by both sides of the conflict.
