And So it Begins...

It's hard to believe that with the 2020 General election almost a year and a half away, and the first early primary over 6 months away, that we're heading into the first Democratic party primary debate. Tonight and tomorrow night will feature a total of 20 (!) candidates hoping to make a name for themselves and garner more support. For the viewers, it will be a little weird, due to the lottery system they used to divide the candidates between the two nights.

For tonight's debate, Elizabeth Warren will be the sole "Big Dog" surrounded by puppies. Essentially, they'll all be vying for a veep slot. Besides her (she's currently at the top of the polls), the rest are at the bottom of the pack:

  • Beto O’Rourke

  • Amy Klobuchar

  • Cory Booker

  • Julian Castro

  • Tim Ryan

  • Tulsi Gabbard

  • Jay Inslee

  • Bill De Blasio

  • John Delaney

Tomorrow night will have more firepower, as several top tier candidates try to steal any gains made by Warren in tonight's debate. Those candidates are:

  • Joe Biden

  • Bernie Sanders

  • Kamala Harris

  • Pete Buttigieg

  • Kristen Gillibrand

  • Andrew Yang

  • Marianne Williamson

  • John Hickenlooper

  • Eric Swalwell

  • Michael Bennet

So yes, there are some hopefuls here unlikely to make it past the first couple of primaries. There are also four potentials who did not qualify for the debates (either by funding or polling):

  • Steve Bullock

  • Seth Moulton

  • Wayne Messam

  • Mike Gravel

Of these 20, only Corey Booker is also up for re-election for the U.S. Senate next year. It would be a shame to lose him in the Senate, but it's a pretty safe Dem seat anyway. We'll see how far in the process he makes it.

For the other hopefuls (and - quite frankly - hopeless), Samantha Bee has a better idea: run for the Senate:
Bee joins others who have suggested some long-shot candidates run for Senate instead. She said, "I totally get why you wouldn't want to be in the Senate, you have to do painful things like craft legislation that never goes anywhere and see Chuck Schumer in the gym."

Bee specifically called out former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, who have not performed well in preliminary presidential polls. Both candidates are well-liked in states where Senate seats are controlled by the GOP, but that they could potentially flip.

Bee said, "We need Democrats who understand voters in places like Colorado and Montana. Otherwise, the next Supreme Court justice will probably just be a Bible taped to a mop handle."

Yes indeed - we can flip the Senate. In some ways, that is even more important than taking the White House. If we want to put an end to the gross destruction of democracy, it's imperative we Ditch Mitch, by supporting the KY Dem Senate candidate, and any R willing to primary him. At the very least, returning him to Senate minority leader would be sweet.

Yep - as long as Bitch McConnell is in charge of the Senate, it matters not whether we win the presidency.

Morning

Yes we need more focus on the Senate! Frankly, I've never heard of a bunch of these people. I'm sure they are all smart and fierce but no.

So my top 5 has grown to a 5+ - there are certainly people I would like to hear more from.

I hope that the Democrats will comment on Trump's tax cuts. I have not seen any real benefit from them.

I'm actually surprised there was a chief of protocol position filled at all.

ACK I'm behind on today's SCOTUS opinions!

US v. Hammond (Gorsuch, 5-4) - Sex Offender statute that returns violators to prison for violating parole terms ruled unconstitutional. Breyer has a concurrence, Alito has the dissent.

Kisor v. Wilkie (Kagan, 9-0 with multiple concurrences) - retroactivity of VA medical benefit claims. This one's a bit of a legal salad.

TN Wine & Spirits v. Thomas (Alito, 7-2) - constitutionality question of Tennessee's retail liquor licensing residency requirements. Gorsuch wrote the dissent.

This is gonna be interesting.

Is it wrong that I am pleased with so many NON 5-4 rulings?

Does that violate protocol?

I heard this interview this afternoon, this was the second time be b-b-b-b-bd her during this interview.

'metering' asylum is a Trump Administration policy. He was 24 years old, his daughter was 24 months. They both died due to the policy of this administration not because of law.
