The Torture Never Stops
Author: BobR    Date: 02/13/2009 13:37:14

As a society, we have certain boundaries beyond which we do not cross. For most of us, we do not cross them because of empathy, our understanding of human dignity, and the moral codes we have learned or created. A small minority cannot be trusted to stay within those boundaries, so we create laws and a means to enforce them. But what happens when those we've entrusted with the power to enforce the laws step beyond the powers we've granted and become as bad as (or worse than) those whose transgressions demand prosecution? Our outrage is strong and justified, and they are made to pay for their crimes. What happens when this occurs - not at a local or state level - but at an international level?

This is a question that is becoming increasingly clear demands an answer. With a new president in office and FOIA information requests being granted once again, the documentation is startling, horrifying, and infuriating.

At the head of the list is documented evidence that two men were tortured to death just two days after Rumsfeld okayed the abusive treatment:
Newly declassified Defense Department documents describe a pattern of “abusive” behavior by U.S. military interrogators that appears to have caused the deaths of several suspected terrorists imprisoned at a detention center in Afghanistan in December 2002, just two days after former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld authorized the use of "enhanced interrogation" techniques against prisoners in that country.

Just let that thought roll around on your tongue for a minute and see if you can keep from spitting it out in disgust - the U.S. tortured at least two men to death.

Another report says that with all the focus on waterboarding, the levels to which we've sunk are much lower, including slicing genitals with a scalpel:
The 25 lines edited out of the court papers contained details of how Mr Mohamed’s genitals were sliced with a scalpel and other torture methods so extreme that waterboarding, the controversial technique of simulated drowning, “is very far down the list of things they did,” the official said.

Sexual deviancy seems to be a central component in the arsenal of brutality against prisoners, if the anecdotal evidence is any indication. Another prisoner reports:
His lawyer, Ejaz Naqvi, has filed legal papers with Mumbai magistrate's court, claiming the "white woman" removed all his clothes and showed him pornographic films.

In the papers, he claims that three foreigners, including the woman, sexually abused him, causing him "severe itching and wounds" on his body, including his genitals.

Mr Ansari, a devout Muslim, claims this amounts to torture because it is against his religion, The Sun newspaper has reported.

A court in the Indian city ordered medical checks on "wounds on his private parts and all over his body."

To help ensure that their medieval tactics did not see the light of day, the Pentagon used several tactics, including running secret prisons, hiding detainees identities from the Red Cross, and delaying the release of prisoners when the attention of the press might be harmful. This shows that the Pentagon was complicit and worked with the CIA. THAT generally means that a higher body (ie: the Bush Administration) coordinated that cross-department cooperation.

So that brings us back to the original question: what to do? A recent poll shows that 2/3 of Americans want the abuses of the Bush Administration investigated. Despite the flow of information, however, the darkest secrets are still being held back. Even Obama is getting redacted documents. Meanwhile, KKKarl Rove is ignoring Congressional subpoenas while commentating on FOX News and torture policy architect John Yoo is teaching at Berkeley University.

This may take an international effort. The World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) based in Switzerland may be involved in this. In a report on torture in 2007, they did not specifically mention the U.S., but it's pretty clear who they meant:
OMCT’s efforts are nonetheless more indispensable than ever, for while the 20th century brought absolute condemnation of torture, the early 21st century is witnessing a worrying phenomenon, revealed since 11 September 2001: namely the tendency in certain Western countries to consider certain forms of torture as legally acceptable. While the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment (hereafter the Convention against Torture) establishes the absolute prohibition of these practices, it describes them differently. Various governments therefore attempt to circumvent and to interpret this international definition in order to justify certain methods. This evolution is extremely worrying, since it entails a certain degree of relativism and the erosion of the prohibition of torture, thereby calling into doubt its absolute nature in the name of cultural differences. The 1993 Vienna Declaration, in reaffirming the universality of rights, reaffirmed that various cultures cannot relativise human rights. Yet today it is those who fought for this Declaration in Vienna who are currently relativising the absolute prohibition of torture, under the guise of the right to security or the anti-terrorist struggle.

OMCT is headed by Kofi Annan, the former head of the UN, so they do carry some weight. They can work with the UN to ensure that the criminals of the past Administration face up for their crimes against humanity at the Hague. Hopefully, the U.S. will cooperate and "rendition" these animals to The Netherlands for their trials.

One final bit of consolation: We've often speculated on where the Bush Administration criminals would run to avoid prosecution. Bush has a spot in Paraguay, and Halliburton moved to Dubai, so we always figured Cheney would fake his death and end up there. However, Dubai may not be a pleasant place to stay much longer; it is spiraling down in an economic free fall:
With Dubai’s economy in free fall, newspapers have reported that more than 3,000 cars sit abandoned in the parking lot at the Dubai Airport, left by fleeing, debt-ridden foreigners (who could in fact be imprisoned if they failed to pay their bills). Some are said to have maxed-out credit cards inside and notes of apology taped to the windshield.

Whither now, Dick?

Thom is giving us tools by relaying stories like this:

Impact of US plan will be felt slowly

Knowledge is power and if we have this information, we can cite it when people say "The stimulus isn't working. Obama sucks." We can answer them by saying that we knew it would take a while.

Better yet, we get out ahead of those comments, by forewarning people with our newfound knowledge, that the change won't be seen tomorrow and we should be prepared. Seeing nothing obvious change won't be failure...it will be exactly what was expected. We just need to make sure people expect it!

A little perspective, hmm?

Here's Bush's Term:

From and including: Saturday, January 20, 2001

To, but not including : Tuesday, January 20, 2009

It is 2922 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date

Or 8 years excluding the end date

And here's Obama's:

From and including: Tuesday, January 20, 2009

To, but not including : Friday, February 13, 2009

It is 24 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date.

All we did on November 4 was pull the brake handle. It's going to take some time to get back on track, since the track needs to be fixed, then we've got to rebuild the engine, then re-rail the whole thing.

That is radio, they will fire your ass if your rating slip or can figure out how to something cheaper (Clear Channel). I the case of Bubba, CC wanted to do everything on the cheap. Cause if you have one morning guy with an engineer and producer in one place that means you don't to have the them at all the rock stations you own. All you have is board ops who make maybe 10 bucks an hour. See you do "more with less" and end up with a cheap, shitty product.

Comment by Raine on 02/13/2009 19:59:48
Also from that same blog

More information is emerging about the technicalities of the word “technical” that are being used by Anita Drobny and Nova-M radio as an excuse for Rhodes absence from her nationally syndicated show. “It is not an NSF issue,” said a source familiar with the situation at WJNO, where Rhodes originates her show via ISDN connection to the greater Phoenix Nova-M facilities where it is satellite uplinked to affiliated stations.

The new information confirms that Premiere (the Clear-Channel owned syndicator that distributes Rush Limbaugh) will not be involved in distributing the Rhodes program. It contradicts an earlier report that Rhodes will return as a Clear Channel employee hosting a local program. Radio & Records is reporting that the “technical” dispute is a contractual issue, which is echoed at the LTR blog: “Negotiations are reportedly completely amicable with both sides determined to get Rhodes back on the air as soon as possible.”

Her studio in the West Palm Beach Clear Channel cluster is available and unused, writes a knowledgeable source, “Whenever [Rhodes] and Nova-M decide she can put her ass in the seat, it’s waiting for her.”

Hmm.. yeah I had a feeling this was a JP rpg-type game. It's tough to explain, but rape fantasy is a somewhat open subject in Japanese culture, and is somewhat common in anime/manga. It doesn't surprise me too much to see a game along those lines.

But the problem here is that someone made a English-language page, which opened up the door to this kind of scrutiny.

Amazon is selling a rape Simulation Game.

Is this for ReAL?!? I just looked on Amazon.co.uk and didn't see anything by that name.

Hmmm..

Hmm.. yeah I had a feeling this was a JP rpg-type game.

And of course now we, the prudish American/English culture get another reason to denounce stuff from Japan as weird and Immorral.

Fun huh?

Of course I wonder if it's any worse than American games that, let's be honest, "simulate killing."

I guess it is, but you get my point.

Making a "game" out of Rape Simulation, or Murder simulation is kind of strange.

If that makes me a prude, I will wear that badge.

I am all for openness in sexuality....and fetishes, etc....when they are between consenting adults. Rape doesn't fall into that category...at ALL!

Americans are Puritans in a lot of ways where I would say "lighten up." But, this is different, in my opinion.

well, one, i that was more in my general annoyence for people to paint japanese culture as one thing because of games like that. I've had plenty of people think I'm sick because i like manga, anime, Japanese video games.

two, rape is a fetish. usually it's consenting so it's not really rape, but it's play. People get off on it. Don't ask me why.

three, it's a video game. It's not real. It's weird, it's twisted, and not something I'd really think about buying, but in the end it's just a bunch of 1's and 0's.

Japanese are different, I'll give them that.

And they're a repressed culture, emotionally, which is why stuff like that rape fantasy game is common. And there are plenty of games, shows, comics, books, that are like that.

Random I suggest you read the works of Natsuo Kirino to get a different take on Japanese culture. She's a Japanese feminist who's novels are harsh critiques on the way Japanese culture values women. Highly readable and very engaging.

Not only is there this rape play fantasy stuff, there is the really icky sexual objectification of teen age girls in Japanese pop culture as well. Its as creepy as the rape stuff. Not many Americans are aware of it and they should be.

The Japanese have stuff they need to answer for like the Rape of Nanjing. To this day despite the mountain of documentation otherwise, the official response is on the lines of, "What the fuck did we do?" There are academics in Japan with very good reputations who with their dying breathes will deny that that the Imperial Army didn't kill almost have the population of the city.

When I was in Manila in 2002, we stood inside the old walled city of Intramurous.

There was an underground storage building that had been used as a dungeon and torture chamber by the Japanese.

In 2002, 60 years after Japan invaded, they were still pulling skeletons out of the cellars and had no idea how many Filipinos had been killed there. Other parts of the city had buildings that were intentionally left un-repaired so the people wouldn't forget.

My point was, that this just means people, and i won't say every one, since hyperbole is wrong now, will take this as another reason to look at things from japan as sick, and wrong, and twisted.

Cause you know what, a lot of people already do. A lot of people think if it's japanese, it's perveted.

That was all my point was.

I gotcha.

Just don't be so sorry about defending your belief...

It seems like you got angry as soon as someone disagreed with ya.

I'm not sorry about my beliefs. or even defending them. I didn't say sorry. I didn't get angry. I got depressed, i got emotional, i got upset...the fuck it was one of exhaustion, not of anger.

Oh I agree with you. I like to think there are things about certain MMOs are I like and things I don't like. For example, I've only tried out three games - FFXI, WoW and WAR.

FFXI has a great battle system, storylines, craft-type systems, missions/quests and team fights, extensive endgame content and the best graphics tho they could use some improvement since the game's six years old. BUT the PvP is boring and is skewed to certain classes, there's lots of RMT abuse, and the company doesn't really care much for the players.

WAR has the best PvP, hands down. And the economic system is great too, similar to FFXI only it really can't be abused by RMT. BUT once your character reaches a certain point, there's no more advancement, and endgame is almost completely PvP so you REALLY need to be into that kinda thing for the game to stay exciting.

WoW... errr well they have the best marketing team.

Going out to do errands. It is getting too nuts on the roads here. I really would like a good public transit system so that I could get around without necessarily using the car. Either that or I should get a job in Manhattan so I can take the train or bus/subway to work.

I wonder if Clear Channel is trying to ditch Randi because of her attacks on Rush but apparently she needs a new deal with Nova M but then again Manzo was supposedly Randi's boy toy for a while and since he is on the outs with Nova M there could be a lot more involved here.

What I'm more interested in seeing is as Clear Channel and SiriusXM are swirling down the drain how they're going to handle their big contracts (Limbaugh / Stern)

Comment by livingonli on 02/13/2009 23:41:23
Limbaugh's show is actually not on satellite radio although Hannity's is. I think they probably make the same deals that a station does for the syndicated shows. I think the only extra is what XM paid Air America for satellite radio exclusivity premerger which may be moot now that XM only airs 4 Air America shows (soon to be 3 when Thom Hartmann leaves). The big contracts are the in-house shows like Stern, O&A, Mad Dog, Oprah, Martha Stewart, etc. and what they pay for the rights to broadcast sporting events like MLB and NFL games.

It's official. Randi Rhodes is no longer with Nova M Radio.

To all of Randi's listeners;

You are all correct - I have not had the option to disclose what has been happening between Randi and Nova M...

You see, it's in her contract that she has total control, but, after Wednesday night, I want you all to know that Nova M has done everything we can to get her back on the air.

All this is her choice; if she wants to tell you all what the issue is, then I hope she does, but I can't according to her contract rules.

But I can tell you this I have wanted her back on the air. She's an amazing talent and needs to be heard.

Thank you all for all of your support.

Randi now has to make her decisions as to what she must do with her career...

Randi was the primary money maker at Nova M Radio. I understand that Mike Malloy's program does not make money for the network. So, the network faces a huge dilemma - what do they do without their greatest source of revenue?

Dial Global now has Thom and Momma and Ed shultz and Neil Boortz.

if Jones flipped to Dial then I would assume it has Ed Schultz. Could be iffy, but the reality is this... Randi has a radio show that works... She and Ed don't have to compete... they can each have shows in markets that work.

I hope this is the case.

I still stand by my theory that Clearchannel said no more to Randi. NovaM did not have enough mony to fight it.

Comment by livingonli on 02/14/2009 03:36:10
Jones is now Dial Global. They took it over. Ed actually sends his show out at Noon same time as Thom Hartmann. The show is refed at 3 PM for the stations that didn't move him up. Here in New York, we lost Thom Hartmann to Ed Schultz and XM sends out Ed Schultz live at Noon and have been running Randi at 3 and then Thom on Delay at 6 PM ending with Malloy at 9 on the new schedule

Comment by Raine on 02/14/2009 03:37:20
That leads me to the next question...

How many channels broadcast from ClearChannel?

I smell something REALLY funky here.

Comment by livingonli on 02/14/2009 03:37:48
Ed Schultz moving to Noon was done by Jones before Al Franken hoping that he would get that time slot after Al left which happened in some but not all markets.

Comment by livingonli on 02/14/2009 03:41:23
Strangely enough, most of the progressive talkers at least the ones left are still owned by Clear Channel. The exceptions seem to be Nova M in Phoenix, WCPT in Chicago, WWRL here in New York and WWKB in Buffalo as the few progressive talkers not owned by Clear Channel. Although Obama 1260 in DC was sold by Clear Channel to the Redskins owner before the format flip.

WAR can either mean Warhammer, or its extended name Warhammer: Age of Reckoning.

RMT means real money trade, or the exchange of actual money for virtual in-game money, items and even whole game accounts. While not specifically illegal by law, it is against the terms of service of all MMO games and the publishers will usually do what they can to control such activity. Hence the abuse part..

PvP means Player vs. Player. Easy enough to figure out. Similar terms included RvR (Realm vs. Realm, or Team/Guild PvP) and PvE (Player(s) vs. a server-programmed Enemy).
