From this morning's LA Times:
This month, the Pentagon and the Iraqi government are finally closing the books on the program that handled all those Benjamins. But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $6.6 billion in cash — enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.

For the first time, federal auditors are suggesting that some or all of the cash may have been stolen, not just mislaid in an accounting error. Stuart Bowen, special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, an office created by Congress, said the missing $6.6 billion may be "the largest theft of funds in national history."
Isn't this something we have all at the very least suspected for years?

I'm going to leave this out there today, and hopefully it will get a bit of a news lead. How, after over a half a decade, the Pentagon can't find such a large amount of money is beyond me. Stolen or not, someone should be held responsible for losing such a large sum of money -- Didn't Bernard Madoff go to jail for something just like this? Sadly, it looks like the taxpayer is once again footing the bill. After more than 7 years, no one has been held accountable for anything regarding this illegal action in Irag. Now we have what appears to be bona fide embezzlement.

In the meantime, watch the GOP try to protect the likes of KBR, Halliburton and the company formerly known as Blackwater (Now known as Xe.). They are, after all, businesses who need MORE taxcuts to get the free market back on it's feet.

War really IS a racket.
