I Could Healthcare Less
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-07-23 11:51:28

Ever since Hillary Clinton dropped a fifty pound document describing a new health plan for America back when her husband was president, the Republicans have been dead-set against anything that comes between a patient and their insurance company. People like to say "America is #1", but the reality is that about the only things we're number one at are things not to be proud of, including bankruptcies because of medical bills.

That hasn't stopped the Republicans from trying to prevent any sort of healthcare reforms or health insurance regulations. When they couldn't stop the ACA from becoming law, they made it their life mission to destroy it. Over fifty votes later in the Republican-controlled House, they still haven't been able to repeal it.

What they haven't been able to accomplish via legislative means they might actually accomplish via the courts (or - in their words - "legislating from the bench", which they rail against until it goes their way).

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,671st day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,334
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,125

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through:

$ 1, 551, 261, 525, 000 .00

There's so much going on these days, it's difficult to even know where to begin. I suppose we're lucky; most of the wars going on now don't seem to directly involve American soldiers...but of course we've got to stick our noses in everyone else's business anyway.

Science Saturday
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 2014-07-19 11:53:49

While the news on Easth, from Israel and Gaza to the Ukraine and beyond is often depressing, there is indeed more to existence than our world.  Today, as a change from our look at the problems of our world, I thought that we would look at some science news.

The search for planets beyound our own solar system is heating up.  I wonder how soon we will find evidence for life beyond our own world?

Lot of work things I have to juggle today, but in general the world has seen a lot of crap in the last 24 hours, at the very least. We need something beautiful.

Van Gogh's Starry Night - I know its cliche but it my favorite painting and reminds me of the beauty that is always around.

Over the past few years much has been made of the North Carolina state government and its efforts to turn a once-proud state into West Somalia. Granted, there have been no end of crazy laws and bans going on across the nation (witness the Virginia lege banning flags on sticks in the capitol building), but when it comes to pure, unadulterated legislative ridiculousness, the Old North State has them all beat, hands down

Cop Killers
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-07-16 10:45:00

I got my black shirt on
I got my black gloves on
I got my ski mask on
This shits been too long

I got my twelve gauge sawed off
I got my headlights turned off
I'm 'bout to bust some shots off
I'm 'bout to dust some cops off

I'm a cop killer

(from "Cop Killer" by Body Count)

It's been 23 years since Rodney King brought to light the problem of Driving While Black in Los Angeles. The video of the police brutality, followed by the subsequent acquittal of the cops who unleashed their frustration on that poor man unleashed a torrent of anger and frustration by a black community that had been dealing with institutionalized bigotry for decades.

The song "Cop Killer" came out the following year. In the 2 decades since of discussion and innumerable cellphone videos that show police still have a problem with maintaining an appropriate level of response, we've gotten to a point that seems a little scary. What was once considered marginal, criminal and somewhat theoretical (and 1st Amendment protest) seems to have become a political movement. I am referring, of course, to the Three Percenters.

In new from the war in Afghanistan, the only prisoner of war from the conflict is now back on active duty. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is back to work on an army post, although he may still face an investigation over his disappearance
