The President of AmeriKKKa

There was a lot of brewhaha yesterday over the presser with tRump senior policy adviser Stephen Miller. As can be seen in this video, he had some rather interesting things to say about immigration and the Statue of Liberty:
CNN’s Jim Acosta sparred with White House adviser Stephen Miller in a seriously heated back-and-forth over immigration.

Acosta told Miller, “What you’re proposing or what the President’s proposing here does not sound like it’s in keeping with American tradition when it comes to immigration.”

He quoted the words on the Statue of Liberty “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses” and asked Miller if he’s “trying to change what it means to be an immigrant coming into this country.”

Miller pushed back by saying the words were “added later” and things got even more heated from there.

Miller is certainly playing fast and loose with the facts there. The poem "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazrarus was donated by her to the cause in 1883, prior to the statue's dedication in 1886. It's true it wasn't actually inscribed and added until 1892 - a mere 6 years later - but it's been part of the statue's raison d'être since the beginning. Right from the start, the statue represented the welcoming of immigrants to America to Ellis Island, which also began ramping up its processing in - wait for it - 1892.

From Golf Magazine:
Chatting with some members before a recent round of golf, he explained his frequent appearances: “That White House is a real dump.” Trump is often at his most unguarded among the people who pay for their proximity to him.
Of course, the WH denies it.

Good morning.

Things just seem to keep on escalating. By now, you've heard about North Korea's recent missile test? We're probably all going to die. North Korea is crazy enough to actually use it, and of course things like this don't help any.

It's also rather telling that only military options seem to be up for discussion.

Moving on, I'll file this under "what will Trump soil next"? A Medal of Honour has been awarded to a Vietnam veteran by the President. At least his remarks seemed to be appropriate this time.

We'll finish up in Russia today. Looks like the ol' Tit for Tat with Putin is as strong as ever.. I don't know what kind of deal Russia made with the candidate, but it looks like they can't control their puppet, either.

It's not the first time I've said it - keep swinging at the hornet's nest, and eventually you'll connect.

Good morning.

Bob has already written about this, but as the only uniformed member of the BSA present, I must as well.

The BSA is in Trouble
Author: BobR    Date: 07/27/2017 13:02:24

On Monday night, pResident tRump broke a long-standing tradition by giving a blatantly political address to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). As the BSA noted in a tepid explanation (not really an apology), it has also been a long-standing tradition to invite the sitting president every year to speak to the national jamboree. Some presidents have taken them up on the offer and delivered non-political speeches that fell in line with the Boy Scout values. tRump is the first one to do otherwise.

When Barack Obama was president, he delivered a recorded message, rather than appear in person. That was a tacit protest against the BSA's policy regarding gay scouts and scout leaders (even though Obama himself was a boy scout, and supported the program). That previous policy (which has since been rescinded) did not help bolster the BSA's image when compounded with the message and optics of tRump's "Hitler Youth" fiasco. There was plenty of outrage, and rightly so. It wasn't even just the political aspects either.

Baby Steps.

Last night, this happened.
The House on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly to advance new financial sanctions against key U.S. adversaries and deliver a foreign-policy brushback to President Trump by limiting his ability to waive many of them.

Included in the package, which passed 419 to 3, are new measures targeting key Russian officials in retaliation for that country’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election, as well as sanctions against Iran and North Korea in response to those nations’ weapons programs.

Members of the Trump administration, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, have resisted the congressional push — in particular a provision attached to the Russian measures that would require Congress to sign off on any move to relieve those sanctions.

Good morning.

We'll get right to it - starting in my own backyard. One of Boston's most iconic attractions has been undergoing renovations for the last two years. Sunday evening, on a favorable tide, the USS Constitution was refloated and left drydock to retake her place of honor in the Charles town navy yard.

Good evening.

As most of you know, Javi is away at the National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia.

I learned yesterday that President Trump is going to visit tomorrow (Monday) and address all the scouts.
