Last night I was sitting up in a chair in my bedroom doing research on what I would write about today and the TV was on mute. Then this happened:

Sometimes it does suck to be us.

Most of the time, Massachusetts towers far and above the other, lesser states. Most of the things the rest of you take for granted were probably invented here, or had help from people from here. (Like the United States, but I digress.)

Speaking of which, I hope you all enjoy your holiday this week. Plymouth sound familiar? (I know it's a sore spot with indigenous peoples, and Wal-Mart workers this year, but once again I digress.)

But I've got three stories this morning that will bring us all back to earth...for a few days, at least.

Living in a post-JFK World

A President was murdered 50 years ago today. I wasn't born yet. I grew up hearing great stories about this man President John F. Kennedy. I grew up around schools, libraries, and airports named after a much beloved President that had been killed one afternoon in Dallas Texas.I was taught about Camelot. I grew up seeing plates of Mr. Kennedy next to his wife. I grew up seeing things like this:

Images of President Kennedy were everywhere. He was the man who put us on the moon. He was exotic because he was Catholic. Everyone loved this man, I was told.

Hemispheres

The problem with constantly being surrounded by people like you and familiar stuff is that it becomes so much a part of the fabric of your life, you cease to question it or examine it for what it is. This is true in politics, in racial or economic strata cultures, or - in a broader sense - our common American experience.

It's always interesting and educational to step outside those boundaries, and look in from the outside. It's good to see what others consider normal and abnormal in their circle of life versus yours. I was reminded of this once again as I read this link about things that non-Americans find odd about America. Surprisingly, our health care "system" wasn't a common theme.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,426th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,290
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,105

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 490. 193. 925, 000 .00

Dystopia, USA

Of all the ruins left by the exodus of American manufacturing and the 2008 economic crash, perhaps no place embodies it so vividly as Detroit. Most Americans see Detroit teetering on the edge. Most in Detroit know that they've already gone over. The reality is bleak.

We watched Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown" a few nights ago in which he visited Detroit and documented his visit. He described his actions with mixed emotions as he said he didn't want to participate in the "ruin porn":

I didn't realize how attached I was to little bits of rare metals and micro chip technology until my cell phone crashed. It happened on morning as I was about to embark on a lovely day filled with activities with family and friends. My cell phone quietly notified me that it needed an "update" according to the phones manufacturer.

So, while getting ready for my lovely day, I hit, "update".

I'm still constructing a blog for this morning -- in the mean time, I've been debunking.

I should get paid for this. That said -- I'd just be a paid shill for for the lefties, huh?
