Turning to our friends at IAVA....I haven't posted the news from them verbatim in quite some time. It's easy to do, so I try not to do it that often. But on the other hand, we haven't had a straight "ask a vet" in a while either. So....here's the latest daily briefing.

News on the news
Author: Raine    Date: 09/28/2009 12:29:41

Is this the future of the news? CBS has decided to partner with Global Post -- a web site for foreign news. PBS has done the same with Tehran Bureau -- a site I first stumbled across during the Iranian protests that began earlier this year, the New York Times is reporting this morning.

I am quite mixed about this. While I tend to trust PBS more than CBS to do the right thing with the information gleaned from these webites, I wonder what they will do to the actual stories? GlobalPost seems like it has a good business model. We need good foreign reporting - but what we need even more is more honesty from our own media.

Come Clean
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/27/2009 13:18:17

"...art can transcend pain." Roman Polanski spoke these words when he won the Oscar for Best Director for the emotional film "The Pianist" in 2003. Roman has long been one of my favorite directors, he and his movies are iconic and will be with us long after he's gone: Rosemary's Baby, Death and the Maiden, Chinatown, Tess and one of the films that got me interested in the study of film 1965's "Repulsion".

Roman has not set foot in the US or UK since his indictment of child rape in 1977. Last night, he was finally arrested for his crime.

Cleaning out the drawer of the blog mind...

With the usual apologies to Bob Ryan, from whom I shamelessly steal this idea from time to time.

You wanna buy a Fiat?

Yeah, that's right...the longtime Italian carmaker that hasn't sold a car in the United States for quite some time. (Like most carmakers though, they're a giant conglomorate. You can easily find Alfa-Romeos and Maseratis here, but not the 'base' nameplate.)

In any case, you might remember that Chrysler has a huge stake in Fiat. You might also be aware that Chrysler can't sell a car in the US to save their company. So.....instead of the folks in Detroit taking the time and effort to design and build a car in the US that people might want to buy, they've decided to put the Chrysler label on this:

The Addiction
Author: BobR    Date: 09/25/2009 12:30:29

Addiction is an awful thing. Whether addicted to drugs, or whether one is an "adrenaline junky", there's nothing one will stop at to get that next fix. The other aspect of the addiction is the contradictory problems of always trying to recapture that first time, and the reality that each time it takes a little more just to get to the same level as before. The body adjusts and works against the craving. This is why adrenaline junkies take on bigger risks. In my opinion, Glenn Beck is addicted to fame.

Sept 2009: An American Lynching
Author: Raine    Date: 09/24/2009 13:05:18

Back in June, I wrote a blog about how the right wing was upping the ante. It pissed a good many people off. It was after we saw the assassination of a security guard in Washington DC. It was after the assassination of Dr. Tiller. It was 2 months after the DHS report came out that people went ballistic over. I almost could have reposted it word for word regarding the events that have unfolded over the past 24 hours. Here is part of what was written:

Welcome To Atlantis

Anyone who's seen the news lately has likely heard the story and seen some of the footage - Atlanta is flooded. It seems impossible. Atlanta is not in really in an area anyone would consider a flood plain. There is only one major river that flows through the city, and it's not even big enough to be navigable for shipping. There weren't any hurricanes coming ashore. So what happened?... and what is the state leadership doing?

Governor Giuliani? It could be.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/21/2009 13:46:27

Over the weekend it ws reported in the NYT that President Obama requested NYS Governor David Patterson to not run for election in 2010. Heads exploded around the internets. I know I no longer reside in NYS, so I understand it might be puzzling as to why I am writing about this today. I still love my home state, but this has far bigger implications for the Democratic party on a national scale.

The Republocrites
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/20/2009 13:49:33

Recently the Republicans held some sort of soirée called the “Values Voters Conference” at the Hilton Hotel in Washington DC which is most remembered for being the site that John Hinckley attempted to get Jodie Foster to notice him. In attendance were the haut monde of the Republican Party. Those that hold their values high and their "holier than thou" sword above the bed of their wives and mistresses; their moral compass never wavers from the direction of the righteousness.

Or does it?

There are some Republicans who I like to call: Republocrites.

Republocrites are those in the GOP who admonish us “little people” that we must always take the moral high ground, while they have been known to wander off the path and into a bank or a whorehouse or, if God were to bless them, a multinational financial center with a whorehouse and a casino attached!

Here are just a few cases in point of those that attended the Conference begging for those Christian votes.
