Primary Lessons
Author: BobR    Date: 03/21/2012 13:05:40

This has certainly been an interesting primary season. It's hard to believe that it's been 4 years since (then) Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were battling it out for the Democratic nomination. It literally came down to the wire with breath held at the convention until Ms. Clinton nobley put party over personal ambitions, and ceded the nomination to Mr. Obama. It was a textbook example of how a close primary should be run. The Republican primary was clearly decided long before their convention; only the veep slot was up in the air, and we all know how THAT worked out.

Good Morning.

Today is our 3,817th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,913
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,007

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 313, 775, 850, 000 .00

It's been a tough few days on the Veteran's front. I hope you had the chance to catch Mr. Rieckhoff as he made the talk-show circuit this past weekend. In any case, that's not the only incident that's happened. You may have missed it with all the headlines, but a similar incident (albeit on a far smaller scale) took place in San Jose, California.

If you read nothing else this morning, I ask that you take a look at this post from Think Progress. A lot has been said about a young man named Trayvon Martin in the past week -- but it is not enough.

What Everyone Should Know About Trayvon Martin

We've Come For YOU!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 03/18/2012 16:21:17

Well, Velvveta has overslept, and now must come up with some semblance of brilliance to meet the level of bar that has been raised recently with my fellow posters. BobR's always poignant and thought-provoking posts as well as Raine, who even in the depths of sadness and trauma can write scathing, excellent posts such as her recent "egu-ALL-ity" and yesterday's post by TriSec which was so on point and interesting that it could well be a description for an advanced studies class at an Ivy League!

And so we come to Sunday. Thank whatever God you worship or deny, for large Sunday newspapers and sports on the TV that few people read this dribble. I apologize to be the one to bring the bar back down to extra low.

What kind of a liberal are you, anyway??
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/17/2012 13:17:08

Good Morning.

I've been pondering my position recently. Some of you have tangled recently on the book of faces with a person I respect very much for his activities through Scouting.

I've almost been tempted to make the comment to him that "it's awful tough being a liberal in a Scout uniform", but common sense has taken hold and I've not said anything. I also have a raging con in my Pack; the back of his vehicle is covered with a multitude of anti-Obama stickers, but again this has never been mentioned during the course of any official event.

Listen to Mother
Author: BobR    Date: 03/16/2012 13:00:23

An early spring has generated in us an itch to dig in the dirt. We've cleaned out the garden spaces, started seeds indoors, and are generally ready to see the flowers and vegetables growing. It seems that there's something in our DNA that - despite the availability of fresh and convenience foods everywhere - we want to grow our own. Farmer's markets are also popular, as people embrace the idea of locally grown, with "backyard" being as local as you can get. It's good for us, and good for the environment.

equ-ALL-ity
Author: Raine    Date: 03/15/2012 15:21:26

It may come as a surprise to you, but March is known as Women's History month. Normally it is a month to commemorate, celebrate and contemplate the achievements of the female gender. These, however, are not normal times.

Just three months into the year, and we have witnessed attacks on women and our rights almost unsurpassed in my lifetime. I am 44 years old. I grew up knowing that contraception was available and not controversial. Abortion has always been controversial in my lifetime, and is something I have long fought to protect as a legal and safe procedure. I believe in having the choice to reproduce or not. I believe that women should be considered equal to men and should be protected as such by our Constitution. I want to see the ERA passed. Remember the Equal Rights Amendment?

Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Hot Gas and Santorum - is that the ticket?
Author: BobR    Date: 03/14/2012 12:43:42

Three more states participated in the primary process last night. What isn't surprising is that Mitt Romney lost both Alabama and Mississippi. After his tone-deaf pandering with comments about "y'all" and "cheesey grits", he's lucky they didn't drag him from the bumper of a pickup truck to the state's border.

No, what's surprising is that Newt Gingrich couldn't pull a victory out of Alabama. Despite it bordering his declared "home state", and being the only other candidate besides Ron Paul with any real southern credentials, he lost it to a "yankee" from Pennsylvania. You'd think he'd be humbled or discouraged. But no, we're talking Newt, whose beltline is surpassed only by his ego. He sees no reason to get out now:

In Case you Miss it...
Author: Raine    Date: 03/12/2012 12:57:20

Today's Doonesbury may not be running in your local paper today, as it is considered too far past the line of good taste for some editorial boards. In the age of the internets, I find this funny, sad and futile. I am posting it here.
