Mitt Romney is known to be a bit of a political windsock. When he was governor of Massachusetts, he was considered fairly liberal for a Republican. He was in favor of abortion access for women. He helped create "Romneycare", which was more progressive than anything occurring at the national level.

When he ran for president in 2008, and especially so in 2012, the old Romney was cast aside, and a new Romney was revealed. The new Romney was "severely conservative", he wanted to end abortions in all cases, including rape and incest. He hedged on Romneycare, saying that was the right thing for MA, but Obamacare was horribly wrong for the country.

As he began winning primaries, and it became clear he was the front-runner and likely candidate, it began to occur to the campaign that his hard-right turn for the primaries needed to be "corrected" for the general election. Romney senior campaign advisor Eric Fehrnstrom let slip in a March interview that they would be shaking the etch-a-sketch to reset all his policy positions. It was a damning remark, because it put truth to the notion that Romney has no convictions to his positions. He is as comfortable changing his positions as he is changing his expensive suits.

It's unclear whether it's the general malaise and lack of enthusiasm for Romney, or the hangover from the economic crash of 2008 still hurts, or that people have looked at what President Obama has accomplished and blame Congress for what he hasn't gotten done, but Romney's poll numbers have never been very good. He has been struglling to really just pull even with Obama, and it seems pretty clear that unless a major seismic shift occurs, he is headed for defeat.

His solution? Reboot the campaign... which he has tried several times.

There is No Debate
Author: Raine    Date: 10/04/2012 13:02:52

Last night was an unmitigated disaster, this is clear. One man was desperate on that stage last night.

I believe the other man, the incumbent President, came to debate issues and facts. That is impossible to do when the opponent tells flat out lies to the American people. It's impossible to debate a lie unless there is acknowledgement of said lie.

The Morality of Money
Author: BobR    Date: 10/03/2012 13:03:37

The video of presidential hopeful Mitt Romney castigating 47% of Americans which surfaced from the murky depths of the internets a couple weeks ago seemed certain to permanently damage his campaign. Romney tried to tap dance and claim his points were "ineloguently stated". Running mate Paul Ryan characterized it as a "misstep".

Stop it.

Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring. This is hard and, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.”
Ann Romney, to her Republican critics on how her Husbands campaign has been going.

I'm in a rut
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/29/2012 11:50:30

Well, I've got nothing interesting today.

I've got about 5 things could write about on my clipboard, but they're all falling under the certain "sameness" of things we've been talking about for weeks.

I suppose it has reached that silly season; there's not many more weeks left to the general election, and we're down to Obama looking Presidential, and Romney not. There's only so many things I can say about that without falling into parrot-mode.

So...it's raining around here today, but if you're in a sunnier area of the northern tier, it might be heading towards peak foliage season. (I'd say we have about another 10 days or so in this area.)

So get out there and look at some leaves...then buy some cider and apples from the locals!

Can You Dig It?
Author: Raine    Date: 09/27/2012 12:56:35

I'll betcha $10,000 you don't dig it dimply because you can't afford to dig it.

Smells Like Team Spirit
Author: BobR    Date: 09/26/2012 14:21:31

I've said it before and I'll say it again: This election should have been extremely difficult for President Obama to win. With unemployment levels remaining at an uncomfortable level, the Republican candidate should have been able to make hay out of the current economic situation. The problem of course is that Mitt Romney became that candidate, and is not exactly selling his economic plan to the country, especially when he is so grossly out of touch with 47% of it (many of whom would normally be inclined to vote for him).

Paul Ryan was supposed to help bring some youth, experience, gravitas, and energy to the campaign. He has done none of those things. The problem with Paul Ryan is that he too has spent his political life in a bubble; for him: Congress. There he was lauded and coddled by other Republicans who liked his take-no-prisoners economic approach (or - more accurately - save-no-poor-people economic approach). The gory details of his plan (scant as they are) are appalling to most people once they consider the ramifications.
