Santorum's Truth

It's easy to joke about Santorum and his name. What isn't easy is to listen to is the former senator's rhetoric. It seems to get more pointed as he rises in the polls and popularity around the country. As a matter of fact, it's downright divisive. His rhetoric is getting more emboldened and charged as people learn more about him. Over the weekend Rick Santorum said the following: The “president’s agenda” is “not about you,” he said. “It’s not about you. It’s not about your quality of life. It’s not about your job.
“It’s about some phony ideal, some phony theology,” Santorum said to applause from the crowd. “Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology, but no less a theology.” This is the part of his campaign stump speech that many people have focused on. What is less reported were these comments: “I was talking about the radical environmentalists,” Santorum said. “That’s why I was talking about energy. This idea that man is here to serve the earth, as opposed to husband its resources and being good stewards of the earth, and I think that is a phony ideal.” ....
“I’ve repeatedly said that I believe the president’s Christian,” the former Pennsylvania senator said. “He says he’s a Christian, but I am talking about his world view and the way he approaches problems in this country. I think they’re different than how most people do in America.” In other words, according to Mr.Santorum, President Obama puts Earth before man, and for him that is a phony theology. No offense to my male friends, and they are many, but could we please, please, have a break? Let's elect some sensible, strong women to run the country (world?). Ya'll can just sit back and catch up on TV, go to NASCAR events, drink beer, watch porn, have a never-ending World of Warcraft game, spend the day in the gym and watch every single college football/basketball game and professional baseball game without missing a single one!

"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty" - Wendell Phillips (1811-1884)
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)The turnout for the 2008 election was fairly large by American standards (Americans are notoriously uncommitted when it comes to actually getting their fat asses up off the barca lounger and lumbering down to the polls). It was a fairly monumental race, with the first real chance for a black man to become president, and the country's economy teetering on the precipice of disaster. For most Americans, it wasn't black and white, but green or red. America chose, and we are heading out of the red, and back into the green. That race was inspirational, as evidenced by the turnout. The reality, though, is that EVERY year is an election year. The "off year" elections cover everything from local dogcatcher to state House reps and senators, to the occassional US House rep or senator. Unfortunately, people tend to be less motivated, and turnout is much lower. Even every 4 years, though, people are woefully underinformed when it comes to who is running for local office, and what they stand for.

If you have been watching Rachel Maddow, you already know about the newest draconian law that Virginia just passed -- and is about ready to send to the governor for his signature. If you haven't, allow me to give you a little background. If signed into law, women of Virginia will be required to undergo an ultrasound before getting an abortion. Here's the catch -- it's not an abdominal ultrasound. It will be a transvaginal ultrasound. From Ms. The Virginia state House of Delegates voted 63 to 36 to pass a bill requiring that women seeking abortions undergo a transvaginal ultrasound, which requires a probe being inserted into the vagina. Delegate Charniele Herring (D-Alexandria) criticized the bill, saying "We're talking about inside a woman's body. This is the first time, if we pass this bill, that we will be dictating a medical procedure to a physician." Delegate Herring is absolutely correct. Virginia is now dictating a medical procedure to a physician. This is a perfect example of government intruding into personal lives. It's also a lot more than that. This is not small government -- this is intrusive -- and worse. I'm fairly sure that Rachel Maddow and others have described this procedure called transvaginal ultrasound, but do you know what it looks like? I'm going to show you. ** Warning** The following medical image may be unsettling to some. Continue reading...

Valentine's Day

Ah, Valentine's Day. Yesterday I was pondering the meaning of it all. For hopeless romantics, it's a day of chocolates, flowers, cards, skimpy underclothes, and possibly jewelry. For the lonely, it's a reminder of their status. For everyone else, it runs somewhere between obligation and annoyance. If you wanted to go to your favorite restaurant last night for a regular dinner - forget it. They likely had a special "fixed price" menu, which means less choice and more cost for you... and you better have reservations. We went to our favorite sports pub, where the food is great, the prices fair, and there's always something interesting to watch. There were also a lot of single guys without dates.

How did we miss this? Seriously, what the hell is wrong with us? Marines sport Nazi SS flag in AfghanistanMy great-uncle Michael Ray (my brother's namesake) fought in the US Third Army against the Nazis and the SS; this is how we remember that legacy? I am appalled, dismayed, and yes....ashamed to be an American tonight.

Death, drugs and TV
Author: velveeta jones

Tonight the Grammy awards will no doubt celebrate the life and achievements of Whitney Houston. How she died will be revealed after an investigation. Though many are saying that she died in her bathtub high on drugs. Whether the drugs where prescription or illegal or legal (i.e alcohol) won't matter. I say that her husband killed her. Also fame. And, to make it worse, we all watched it on TV
