Bombs and Money
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 03/20/2011 14:28:45

There are so many things going on this week that Velveeta’s poor little brain nodule is playing a game of Pong on top of a game of Astroids with the Space Invaders theme playing in the background! It’s truly a jumble salad, made worse by lack of sleep.

There is so much going on in the world today. Why, only less than 10 days ago we were worried about the Japan Tsunami. Remember that? We watched in horror as the force of water upon Japan washed away whole cities. As the death toll continues to climb, we hardly mention the “water” except where it relates to getting it on the Nuclear reactors that threaten the country and the rest of the world in some part.

Saturday it is.
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/19/2011 10:36:36

Good Morning!

Well, by now you must know the drill...if it's an early Saturday Morning blog, I must be off to donate platelets!

It's certainly an interesting process...and if you've been a whole blood donor before, why not take the next step? It doesn't hurt...much, and the need is always critical.

But what do platelets do? I asked once, and the Dedham (MA) donor center where I go almost exclusively supports both Boston's Children's Hospital and the Dana-Faber Cancer institute (which you all should know as the "Jimmy Fund Hospital".) Apparently, chemotherapy blasts platelets, so a replacement therapy is often needed for cancer patients. In any case, your mileage may vary.

Hard Work
Author: BobR    Date: 03/18/2011 12:37:11

Once again, the Republicans are doing their best to nothing productive. I'll certainly agree that the budget deficit is a serious problem, one that requires serious thought and sober action. There's also the whole jobs issue that prompted voters to give them control of the House. So why aren't Republicans taking actions on these? Their latest bit of legislative tomfoolery does nothing to help either.

I am talking of course about their bill to defund NPR. How does it affect the budget? What about jobs?

Author: Raine    Date: 03/17/2011 12:28:59

Let's take a break from things for a day, just one day. The news won't go away. I've added some music (scroll down, past the images) but for now, I toast to all of you, my friends near and far:

Here's to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A cold pint-- and another one!

Safe Nuclear Power?
Author: BobR    Date: 2011-03-16 10:28:23

As often happens, a crisis reminds people of controversial topics that have fallen to the bottom of the pile due to other crises. When the BP oil gusher was filling the Gulf of Mexico with poison, the cries for getting off oil were resounding. But how? Wind and solar were once again proposed, "clean" coal was politely mentioned then tossed aside, and nuclear energy was considered as a stop-gap. Sure there's no carbon pollution, but what do you do with the waste? The earthquake and tsunami in Japan have reawoken the latent fear in Americans of the dangers of radioactivity.

Whither now nuclear energy?

Power Concedes Nothing Without a Demand.
Author: Raine    Date: 03/14/2011 13:13:14

Last week was a rough one. There is no question about it. There are still too many conflicting reports from Japan to really know what is going on with regard to the nuclear power plants. To be honest, I am far more concerned with the massive death toll that we will see from the Tsunami. My heart is quite heavy for the people of Japan. It's hard to know what to do in times such as these. I feel somewhat hopeless, but I know succumbing to it is not an option.

I have been wanting this month to write about History, specifically, Women's History, and It has been difficult to approach such a subject without feeling as though I am disregarding the current events of each day. From Wisconsin, to the middle east, people are rallying and fighting for basic rights and freedoms. It's is something that women here in America struggle for every day. Every day someone is trying to roll back the rights our foresisters and brothers fought - and died - to obtain.

End Times
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 03/13/2011 14:44:44

Dateline Wisconsin: NOT the end times for the protesters, which I prefer to call "movers". After all, this is not a protest it's a movement as many people smarter than me have pointed out.

Protests have rocked the Capitol almost every day since Gov. Scott Walker proposed taking nearly all collective bargaining rights away from public workers, but the largest came a day after the governor signed the measure into law. Madison Police estimated the crowd at 85,000 to 100,000 people – along with 50 tractors and one donkey – by late afternoon. No one was arrested.
(snip)

"This is so not the end," said protester Judy Gump, a 45-year-old English teacher at Madison Memorial High School. "This is what makes people more determined and makes them dig in."

What are you afraid of?
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/12/2011 13:10:23

Good Morning!

What are you afraid of today?

Given this past week's news, it could be any number of things. Join me on a brief, round-the-world tour.

Heading East, the first place we come to is Tripoli. Much has happened there in the past few weeks, but sadly it seems that the rebels have lost the initiative and are fighting a defensive battle.

Good News Friday
Author: BobR    Date: 03/11/2011 13:24:31

It's been a rough week. The non-stop assaults on American institutions by the Republicans have been relentless, from unions to woman's rights to NPR to... well, anything that involves the government helping or protecting American citizens. Throw in Libya, and now the massive earthquake in Japan, and I felt it was time for a quick news roundup of a few stories that will make us a feel a little better.
