The Road to Prosperity
Author: BobR    Date: 10/06/2010 12:08:15

Back at the height of the Great Depression, FDR created a public works program to help put Americans back to work. Eisenhower did the same, creating the interstate system in post-war America. The fruit of their labors was a greatly enhanced national infrastructure that we still enjoy today. However, along the way we didn't maintain much of it, and it's become more and more decrepit. With unemployment still high, it seems like a perfect time to invest in our infrastructure again. The problem, of course, is paying for it, or at least justifying a budget deficit to pay for it. It can be done without increasing the deficit, if people are willing to look beyond the "conventional wisdom".

Jobs, Justice and Education
Author: Raine    Date: 10/04/2010 12:50:03

That was what it was about. It wasn't about Glenn Beck, and despite what some people are saying, it wasn't the Anti-tea Party. It was a rally to send a message that this nation needs Jobs, Justice and Education. It was a message to all of Washington DC with an extra emphasis on Republicans and other obstructionists that are standing in the way of achieving these goals for our Nation.

There were a LOT of people there, A lot of people coming together to make it clear that we are still looking for change in this nation. We came together to make it clear we still have a long way to go forward.

One Nation... Really?
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 10/03/2010 15:16:22

I know some of our readers made it to the Rally and am I sure have plenty to add. I was taking a look at what some of our opposite side friends were thinking about this rally. Remember, the One Nation rally was for Jobs, Justice and Education. Things that both Left and Right both believe strongly in. At least I think so....

Anyway, it seems for both sides, size DOES matter.

From NewsBusters:
There are so many problematic items in the establishment press's treatment of yesterday's "One Nation" rally in Washington that it's difficult to know where to begin.

So let's start at the very beginning. Among the many howlers in the coverage is a claim the Associated Press's Philip Elliott pass without response towards the end of his 12:21 p.m Saturday report (saved here at my web host for future reference, fair use, and discussion purposes; bold is mine):

One Nation organizers said that they began planning their event before learning about Beck's rally and that their march is not in reaction to it.

It would appear that either Elliott felt that this statement would easily withstand scrutiny, and thus performed none himself, or that he knew better, and let it get into his report anyway.

Given the fact that so-called progressives have been continually monitoring Beck's activities and pronouncements for several years, One Nation's organizers would have to prove that they began substantively "planning their event" before November 21, 2009. Good luck with that.

The writer goes on to use Wikipedia and Google search as his sources to prove that the rally was thought up after Becks rally.Given that there were so many people here, I wonder if his point is better off left alone.

Winning the Lottery
Author: TriSec    Date: 10/02/2010 12:55:01

Good Morning.

Depressions and Recessions can sure make people do silly things. I don't know if there's any stats about it, but it's not hard to imagine a few more people huddled around the slots or the craps tables at Foxwoods, Atlantic City, or Las Vegas...hoping against hope for that big payoff.

Or maybe there's been a little uptick in the government supported gambling that most of us call 'the lottery'. I don't know if it's good or bad, but we have a local candidate for governor (Tim Cahill, I-MA) that's running primarily on his record in running "the best managed and most profitable state lottery in the country.

But is it a good idea to hope for that one big payoff?

I know what I'd do. To quote a phrase, "I've got a lot of old debts I've got to pay off with this stuff." (Yes, bonus points. Be specific.) We could use some new cars, a house would be nice, and with a big enough payoff we could travel again and maybe I could even go to flight school.

But that's all an untoward fantasy, methinks. Just pulling something out of my arse, have you noticed that no Powerball winner has come from east of the Mississippi river? What's up with that?

Of course, the whole game is rigged. More than a decade ago, one of my friends was able to cobble together $500 and he bought an unopened book of scratch tickets from his uncle, who happened to be a lottery agent. After spending the afternoon scratching away...he didn't even break even.

A Rapist's Bill of Rights
Author: BobR    Date: 10/01/2010 10:21:53

RNC For Life is a PAC that focuses on one specific issue: abortion. They understand very well that peoples' positions on abortion are not black & white. They run the full range from "anyone, anytime" to "nobody, never". Most people fall somewhere in between. You'd think it would be uncommon and extreme to deny a woman an abortion if she had been raped or the pregnancy resulted from incest. According to the PAC's score-sheet of those currently in or running for office, however, there at least 78 GOP candidates who feel just that way. To them, it is more important that the rapist gets to be a father than the victim gets to purge themselves of their attacker's seed. Dr. Drew Weston refers to this type of legal approach as a rapist's Bill of Rights.

It's SO yesterday.
Author: Raine    Date: 09/30/2010 13:28:04

Over the past week, much has been said about VP Joe's Biden's comments about bucking up and voting. It was a message sent towards members of the Democratic Party that have been voicing that they may stay at home this November. The strategy is indeed questionable, as I am not a fan of "Quit Yer Whining Motivation" but given the alternative, he may very well have a point.

Selling the Brooklyn Bridge
Author: BobR    Date: 09/29/2010 11:56:04

As we come down the final stretch of this campaign season, there's one thing we can always count on - political ads. You know the type - they start grainy and ominous, describing how a candidate is one of the devil's own, with unflattering black and white photos. Then - it suddenly becomes warm & fuzzy and full color, describing the virtues of the other candidate, with the de rigeur ending of "I'm ______ and I approve this message". There is a reason for that last bit - it's required by law. The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 made it a requirement to minimize anonymous attack ads.
