Libertarian Saturday

Good Morning! Blecccch. It's a typical spring weekend here in New England...cold, gray, and rainy. So naturally, us crazy Boy Scouts are headed out into the field! Fortunately, we rented a couple of cabins at Camp Massasoit way down by the Sagamore Bridge (almost on the Cape). We'll see how we do... So...as the endless primary season drags on without a clear winner on the Democratic side, and a clear loser on the Republican side, there's been some rumblings about a spoiler. It's not Ralph Nader...if anyone in America is more insignificant to this process, I have yet to see him. No....it could be the Libertarians. As more and more people become disillusioned with the process and start to look for other outlets, more people are finding their way to the LP's doorstep. (Go figure, I wandered away from the parties for just this reason in the early part of this century, but as you saw last week, I'm headed back for the 2008 election cycle...) Party membership is up by 28% this year, and it might just be significant this year. WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Libertarian Party says that the surge of criticism regarding its potential as a spoiler in the 2008 presidential election is understandable, but that the time for political expediency in American politics is finished.
"Far too long have Americans felt it necessary to waste their vote for the 'lesser of two evils' just for the sake of not crossing partisan lines," says Libertarian Party Executive Director Shane Cory. "That's not how our elections should be. Americans are tired of status quo politics and want a candidate in who they can believe -- not just a candidate who will do the least amount of harm."
Libertarians state that the failure of McCain to capture the conservative base of the Republican Party, and the heated split in the Democratic Party between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, will help advance their agenda of smaller government, lower taxes and maximized liberty.
"True conservatives within the Republican Party are not convinced that John McCain is one of them," says Libertarian Party National Media Coordinator Andrew Davis. "Many people who are both socially tolerant and fiscally responsible are looking to the Libertarian Party, which is much more in line with their core beliefs, as a possible alternative to John McCain in 2008. Additionally, some voters who may typically cast a vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama may choose to support the Libertarian Party due to the current economic crisis and the lack of solutions offered by those candidates."
At the end of 2007, the Libertarian Party announced it had seen a surge in membership of 28 percent. The Party believed the success of Ron Paul's campaign, coupled with growing dissatisfaction with the current political establishment, was driving people away from the major two parties into Libertarian ranks.
"The Libertarian Party has the very real potential to capture principled voters in 2008," says Cory. "It's going to be a good year for America." It's exciting times for the party...but I don't actually agree with the last sentence. If the LP splits the vote and we end up with President McCain....it will be a catastrophic year for America.

I remember it like it was almost yesterday. I was sitting at my computer at work, headphones on... I don't remember what was playing, but the anticipation was making me jumpy. For months I'd been reading about it: a new liberal radio network to counter the messages of the right-wing noise machine... and it was going to have Al Franken!... and Janeane Garofalo! Suddenly, I heard the intro. Al Franken's voice came booming through my headphones with his usual deadpan grandiosity and then those magic words: "AirAmerica Radio is on the air". My grin must have confused my co-workers as I listened to him skewer Bill O'Reilly and all the other liars, providing actual facts while also doing his endearingly lame comedy bits. I didn't want to go eat lunch, and eating lunch at my desk became a common thing for me.

On February 7, I wrote a blog called "Your Vagina's Belong to Them"This a continuance of that Blog. For those who have not read it, I humbly ask that you do, as it will explain my position about todays blog. Today, as before, it is graphic and contains strong language. I said the following then: We have a VERY serious problem. AMERICAN women are just another casualty in Bush's war on terror. In all the drama, the constant dribble of horrific stories we hear every day, the constant numbing down that we all feel, we are missing a VERY serious serial problem with one company in particular.
Halliburton/KBR ... They force employees to give up their civil rights in order to be employed. That means you as a woman have the right to be raped by your fellow workers.
No, I am not kidding. And YES, the Government is complicit. In that post, I mentioned three women's stories. I also mentioned that these were just three woman and that for every three that speak up - I am more than sure - there are many others who will not. The following story proves this to be the case.

After hearing about Illinois State Rep Monique Davis (D) on the KO Countdown show last night, it reminded me of how bad the state government is here in GA. So I decided to do a "State of the State" for GA. And how is the state of the state? The state of the state of Georgia is... awful. Well - what can you expect from a state with a Republican Governor and a Republican majority in both houses of the state legislature? This was a particularly awful year with horrible bills and bad behavior by a group of incompetents. The information in this post has been culled and quoted directly from the AJC and the Creative Loafing Golden Sleaze Awards. First, the worst bills that passed into law:

It's springtime in New England. That can only mean one thing...F-16s Screaming over Fenway Park! Of course...we've been here before. So, let's take a look inside the confines of Friendly Fenway Park, where after today's festivities, there's going to be an actual baseball game... Today's Pitchers: For Detroit: Kenny Rogers, LHP, 0-1, 3.00 For Boston: Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP, 1-0, 2.31 There is, of course, a pithy preview posted on a couple of the websites. Speaking of which, there's many places to "watch" the ballgame on line, but my favorite is a little site I call the CBS Baseball Crack Device. Check it out! We'll let the inimitable Dan Shaughnessy take us up to the first pitch.

The Eye of the Storm: Global temps may drop this year but, alas, world still warming - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7329799.stm Global temperatures for 2008 will be slightly cooler than last year as a result of the cold La Nina current in the Pacific. Mr Scaife told the BBC: "What's happened now is that La Nina has come along and depressed temperatures slightly but these changes are very small compared to the long-term climate change signal, and in a few years time we are confident that the current record temperature of 1998 will be beaten when the La Nina has ended." An inspirational kickoff from David Suzuki - http://www.desmogblog.com/an-inspirational-kickoff-from-david-suzuki A room, bursting with 250 Inconvenient Truth trainees gathered in Montreal Friday afternoon for the opening of the first Canadian (and the first bilingual) Al Gore Bootcamp.

Suckers!

You're so vain you probably think this [blog] is about you........ Carly SimonVelveeta does NOT take kindly to being suckered. Not that she has been of late. Just wanted to point it out. The majority of the American people though, don't seem to mind it. I am fascinated by this type of person. The ones that buy bottled water, watch reality TV and believe everything they hear on main stream media from the likes of Tweety, Wolf, Brit and the rest of the corporate talking heads that spew crap out of their mouths. Sadly, most of these suckers also voted for our current clam-head administration because, well, they thought Bush would be fun to have a beer with! I fucking kid you not. If you time-traveled from the past and I told you this was how we picked our leaders you'd never believe it. The bush mafia suckered congress into believing that Iraq had WMD's. How did this happen? Because that very nice black General, Colin Powell, well, he got up there and showed us some pictures and told us that they were chemical weapons factories and stockpiles of various and sundry deadly missiles that could be used against us and our allies. Colin Powell had a hard life and he was able to achieve success in a white mans world, CERTAINLY he wouldn't lie to us. Would he?
