We no longer have the debt ceiling to be concerned about, sequestration has been kicked down the road until May. Failed VP candidate Ryan thinks sequestration will happen, so we can expect Congress to get back to work and take care of the people's business. What issues will they tackle? Gun Control? Jobs plan? Immigration Reform? Reauthorize the Violence Against women act?

The answer is no. Here is what they are going to do:

Attack women. Poor women to be more specific. John Boehner declared it a fundamental goal to make the Hyde Amendment permanent.
Addressing the crowd at the National Mall via video broadcast, Boehner said it's time for anti-abortion activisits to "commit ourselves to doing everything we can to protect the sanctity of life." Step one, he said, is making permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to pay for abortions except in cases of rape or incest.

"For the new Congress, that means bringing together a bipartisan pro-life majority and getting to work," Boehner said. "In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, formally codifying the Hyde Amendment."

That's right, a bipartisan pro-life majority is going to codify something that already exists. What I don't believe exists is a "bipartisan pro-life majority" -- but that's a discussion for another day. It wasn't just John Boehner addressing the crowd:
Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) delivered a sermon that called for a "spiritual cleansing."
Have I mentioned to you lately how much funding Planned Parenthood gets from the federal government?
Planned Parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in "Government Grants and Contracts." That’s about one-third of its total revenues for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009.

However, not all of that money is from the federal government. Planned Parenthood’s government funding comes from two sources: the Title X Family Planning Program and Medicaid. About $70 million is Title X funding, Planned Parenthood spokesman Tait Sye told us. The rest — about $293 million — is Medicaid funding, which includes both federal and state money.
None of the Title X money goes towards abortion.

Let's get back back to the Hyde Amendment. For a refresher, here is a little information :
But in 1977, Congress passed the Hyde Amendment, which banned Medicaid coverage of abortion. This is the only medical procedure that has ever been banned from Medicaid. What's more, Medicaid covers other reproductive health care needs, including birth control and sterilization. And the vast majority of private insurance plans cover abortion, too.

from Wiki: It is not a permanent law, rather it is a "rider" that, in various forms, has been routinely attached to annual appropriations bills since 1976. The Hyde Amendment applies only to funds allocated by the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services. But wait, there is more! Remember Health care reform? Remember this drama?
The Stupak–Pitts Amendment, an amendment to the Affordable Health Care for America Act, was introduced by Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan. It prohibits use of Federal funds "to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion" except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother, and was included in the bill as passed by the House of Representatives on November 7, 2009. However, the Senate bill passed by the House on March 21, 2010 did not contain that Hyde Amendment language. As part of an agreement between Rep. Stupak and President Obama to secure Stupak's vote, the President issued an executive order on March 24, 2010 affirming that the Hyde Amendment would extend to the new bill.

Let me make this clear, Speaker Boehner in saying that this issue is 'One Of Our Most Fundamental Goals This Year' is basically saying that they just don't want to forget to take care of something clerical. Once again: the Hyde amendment doesn't need to be codified, it already exists is the ACA.

After all is said and done, they still haven't learned to leave women well enough alone. Abortion is not a wedge issue as so many have said over the years. Republicans want to take away a woman's right to choose. It's hard to believe after last years rape-infested election that they haven't learned, but here we are. Same shit, different day. They really do live in a bubble.

Raine

Morning, Comrades!

Survived another cold-weather trip, and for Javi's first one, we picked a good weekend. The temperature never got above 25 degrees the entire time. Of course, I stayed with the staff in the cabin. Two reasons..I wasn't entirely convinced that sleeping on the ground was a good idea just two weeks out from treatment, and then I gave Javi my good -5 sleeping bag for the trip, and I knew I would be cold in my 20-degree bag no matter what I did.

In any case, a fine time was had by all, and my troop even won an event!

On the chemo front, I had my follow-up appointment on Friday. I have been given a clean bill of health. There will not be any follow-up scans or testing for about 6 months or so now. I'm getting the port out on Feb 6, and will be soon starting some PT to hopefully help with the neuropathy.
It's a curious thing... I barely complained about anything during treatment. Now that it's done, it hurts to type and it feels like my right shoe is full of gravel all the time. Nature of the beast, I suppose.

But on the plus side, I can have ice and ice cream again, water doesn't "taste like chemo" anymore, and I even had a vodka martini last night...first time since Thanksgiving! (I was far enough off-cycle then that I 'snuck' one.) And even after camping out this weekend, no appreciable fatigue today. Feeling pretty good!

Did you miss that the snowbilly grifter's contract with Fox News hasn't been renewed? What is Sarah gonna do now? I'm thinking she is going to all "Breaking Bad" and start making and selling meth.

Feather knocks TriSec over

The Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation’s largest private youth organizations, is actively considering an end to its decades-long policy of banning gay scouts or scout leaders, according to scouting officials and outsiders familiar with internal discussions.

If adopted by the organization’s board of directors, it would represent a profound change on an issue that has been highly controversial -- one that even went to the US Supreme Court. The new policy, now under discussion, would eliminate the ban from the national organization’s rules, leaving local sponsoring organizations free to decide for themselves whether to admit gay scouts.

Our district chairman was out with us at the Derby. As we often do, we had a lengthy discussion about national policy.

Changing the policy would have a tremendous effect. The liberal wings on both coasts will be happy, local membership may increase, and corporate donations from the financial centers (re: New York and San Francisco) will be back up and running again.

Meanwhile, the Mormons, Catholics, Southern Baptists, and any other homophobic organization will quit, and national membership will fall by many hundreds of thousands of boys.

I can be quite happy here in the Northeast, while my counterparts in Kansas and Utah are mourning what the BSA has become. While I disagree with them, I can also sympathize....whether or not we agree, we can agree that we're in the program for the same reasons - to teach the next generation of boys.

Either way, there are going to be national repercussions, but you know I believe that we're on the right side of the argument here. It remains a complex issue to debate.

Hi, bloggers!! Raine, I fear all that the GOP has left to offer is fear, and attacking women is an expression of this fear. I am not sure that the GOP will do anything substantive in Congress this session.

TriSec, it is good to hear that you are doing better. Hopefully, the side effects of chemotherapy will go away soon.

As for the Boy Scouts, I don't think that there is a policy that will please everyone. It will have to be seen how many local organizations shut down.

Will, the way I'm reading the proposed policy change is that National will no longer dictate membership policy to the individual units - it will be up to the local chartered organizations to decide.

So for my unit, chartered out of a Unitarian Church, we'd be all-inclusive.

The unit cross-town chartered by Our Lady's Parish could remain discriminatory if they so choose.

But of course, this is all speculation until National says something.

Secretary of State William F. Galvin, said today that the special election to fill John F. Kerry’s Senate seat will take place June 25, with a primary set for April 30.

Galvin said his decision about the date was based on a conversation with the secretary of the Senate in Washington. Galvin recommended the June 25 date to Governor Deval Patrick, who has the final say, and is expected to sign off on it.

And of course, I'm already arguing with wingnuts about what is "Morally Straight" on Newsvine.

Hint; it's not being discriminatory or hateful, neither of wich is "morally straight" as far as I'm concerned.

And B-P himself referred to the program as the "Peace Scouts", and did not teach discrimination or hate of any kind. (based on my recent reading of the 1932 Scouts UK handbook, written by him.) It's the BSA national leadership that's been hijacked by religious extremists, as I've been saying at least since 1991.
