Addressing the crowd at the National Mall via video broadcast, Boehner said it's time for anti-abortion activisits to "commit ourselves to doing everything we can to protect the sanctity of life." Step one, he said, is making permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to pay for abortions except in cases of rape or incest.
"For the new Congress, that means bringing together a bipartisan pro-life majority and getting to work," Boehner said. "In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, formally codifying the Hyde Amendment."
Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) delivered a sermon that called for a "spiritual cleansing."
Planned Parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in "Government Grants and Contracts." That’s about one-third of its total revenues for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009.
However, not all of that money is from the federal government. Planned Parenthood’s government funding comes from two sources: the Title X Family Planning Program and Medicaid. About $70 million is Title X funding, Planned Parenthood spokesman Tait Sye told us. The rest — about $293 million — is Medicaid funding, which includes both federal and state money.
But in 1977, Congress passed the Hyde Amendment, which banned Medicaid coverage of abortion. This is the only medical procedure that has ever been banned from Medicaid. What's more, Medicaid covers other reproductive health care needs, including birth control and sterilization. And the vast majority of private insurance plans cover abortion, too.
The Stupak–Pitts Amendment, an amendment to the Affordable Health Care for America Act, was introduced by Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan. It prohibits use of Federal funds "to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion" except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother, and was included in the bill as passed by the House of Representatives on November 7, 2009. However, the Senate bill passed by the House on March 21, 2010 did not contain that Hyde Amendment language. As part of an agreement between Rep. Stupak and President Obama to secure Stupak's vote, the President issued an executive order on March 24, 2010 affirming that the Hyde Amendment would extend to the new bill.

Morning, Comrades!
Survived another cold-weather trip, and for Javi's first one, we picked a good weekend. The temperature never got above 25 degrees the entire time. Of course, I stayed with the staff in the cabin. Two reasons..I wasn't entirely convinced that sleeping on the ground was a good idea just two weeks out from treatment, and then I gave Javi my good -5 sleeping bag for the trip, and I knew I would be cold in my 20-degree bag no matter what I did.
In any case, a fine time was had by all, and my troop even won an event!
On the chemo front, I had my follow-up appointment on Friday. I have been given a clean bill of health. There will not be any follow-up scans or testing for about 6 months or so now. I'm getting the port out on Feb 6, and will be soon starting some PT to hopefully help with the neuropathy.
It's a curious thing... I barely complained about anything during treatment. Now that it's done, it hurts to type and it feels like my right shoe is full of gravel all the time. Nature of the beast, I suppose.
But on the plus side, I can have ice and ice cream again, water doesn't "taste like chemo" anymore, and I even had a vodka martini last night...first time since Thanksgiving! (I was far enough off-cycle then that I 'snuck' one.) And even after camping out this weekend, no appreciable fatigue today. Feeling pretty good!

The news here has been making a big to-do that this happened so close to the 10th anniversary of The Station fire.
The Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation’s largest private youth organizations, is actively considering an end to its decades-long policy of banning gay scouts or scout leaders, according to scouting officials and outsiders familiar with internal discussions.
If adopted by the organization’s board of directors, it would represent a profound change on an issue that has been highly controversial -- one that even went to the US Supreme Court. The new policy, now under discussion, would eliminate the ban from the national organization’s rules, leaving local sponsoring organizations free to decide for themselves whether to admit gay scouts.

Secretary of State William F. Galvin, said today that the special election to fill John F. Kerry’s Senate seat will take place June 25, with a primary set for April 30.
Galvin said his decision about the date was based on a conversation with the secretary of the Senate in Washington. Galvin recommended the June 25 date to Governor Deval Patrick, who has the final say, and is expected to sign off on it.

I don;t see it that way. I will forever disagree with Dan Cathy and his views but what he did was stop advocating for those views. That is a big step forward.
