The Heat is On
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-10-10 10:57:40

I didn't want to write about the government shutdown again. Not only is it getting repetitive, but if I'm still writing about it, that means it's still shut down, and that's bad for everyone. I certainly hope that by the time I cycle around to my next blog post, my friends and countrymen who are employed by the government are back at work, where they all want to be.

It's not just the worker bees that are feeling the heat of the shutdown. On the plus side, the Republicans are feeling the heat too. It seems obvious, but polls show that Americans blame the GOP for this mess:
Overall, 62 percent mainly blamed Republicans for the shutdown. About half said Obama or the Democrats in Congress bear much responsibility.

Asked if she blamed Obama, House Republicans, Senate Democrats or the tea party for the shutdown, Martha Blair, 71, of Kerrville, Texas, said, yes, you bet. All of them.
[..]
Most Americans disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job, the poll suggests, with 53 percent unhappy with his performance and 37 percent approving of it. Congress is scraping rock bottom, with a ghastly approval rating of 5 percent.

Five percent - that is amazing. Rep. Grayson (D-FL) got shut down in the House for pointing out that dog poop is more popular. Even the Republicans' benefactors the Koch brothers are washing their hands of the shutdown. Perhaps they realize that it (and a possible debt limit default) will hit them financially possibly very hard.Yet Speaker Boehner still refuses to allow a vote on a "clean" bill, even though there appear to be enough votes for it to go through.

The problem is that the House Republicans holding everything hostage either don't know or don't care about the consequences. There's a meme floating around the internet that President Obama voted against a debt limit increase in 2006 when he was a senator. What's left off that is he later acknowledged that it was a mistake to do so, and his position then was made out of ignorance.

There is plenty of ignorance going around in these House Republicans. The King of the Deniers in his fool's cap would have to be Louie Gohmert (R-TX), who has a history of stupidity. According to him, the government can't default on loans if it's shut down. I can't even figure out how he came to that thought... If a person is laid off, that doesn't mean they won't miss a credit card payment. It's absurd.

So on the one hand, they are feeling the heat, but on the other hand they are too stupid to know what it means. How burned are they going to have to get before they take their hand off the stove?

One more reason I Joe Biden:
she really learned that lesson when she first got the job as legislative director in Biden's office in 2011, when the vice president gave her a stern warning about ways she could get fired.

First, the veep warned not to share anything she wasn't supposed to with anyone. Ever. And then he told Williams something that has stuck with her to this day.

"Don't ever think that you're so essential to what we're doing that you can't and shouldn't take care of the things that are important to you," he said. "If I ever find out that you are here doing work when you are supposed to be with your family, I'll fire you."

Meanwhile, in Boner's home state....
Ohio Gov. John Kasich ® is considering accepting Obamacare's Medicaid expansion in his state via executive order, his office confirmed to TPM, after the state legislature stymied his efforts earlier this year.

The possibility was first reported by the Columbus Dispatch. “We continue to explore all our options and just want to get this done," Kasich spokesman Robert Nichols told TPM in an email Wednesday.

Six weeks.. and no end to the shutdown.

It's nothing. They gave up nothing.

Nothing but more time for these idiots to keep thousands of people, many of them union members, out of work. And many of those doing 'essential' work won't get paid.

Nothing but keep regulations from being enforced. Jeopardizing the safety of our food, our drinking water, our air, our planet. Allowing the rich and greedy corporations to get away with whatever they want, rather than just a little. Letting paperwork for business loans, licenses, quotas pile up and collect dust while entire industries sit idle.

Nothing but keeping people from receiving assistance that they need. To be able to afford food, medical care, a roof over their heads..

This is Grover Norquists 'drown it in a bathtub' moment.

White House Rejects GOP Idea To Keep Government Closed Through November
Moments after House Republican leaders floated their latest plan for resolving the budget mess on Capitol Hill -- raise the debt ceiling for six weeks but leave the government shutdown in the meantime -- the White House was already shooting it down.

From a White House official:

The President has made clear that he will not pay a ransom for Congress doing its job and paying our bills. It is better for economic certainty for Congress to take the threat of default off the table for as long as possible, which is why we support the Senate Democrats’ efforts to raise the debt limit for a year with no extraneous political strings attached. The President also believes that the Republican Leadership in the House should allow for an up or down vote on the clean continuing resolution passed by the Senate that would pass with a bipartisan majority to reopen the government. Once Republicans in Congress act to remove the threat of default and end this harmful government shutdown, the President will be willing to negotiate on a broader budget agreement to create jobs, grow the economy, and put our fiscal house in order. While we are willing to look at any proposal Congress puts forward to end these manufactured crises, we will not allow a faction of the Republicans in the House to hold the economy hostage to its extraneous and extreme political demands. Congress needs to pass a clean debt limit increase and a funding bill to reopen the government.

Obama: The Only Thing GOP Isn't Demanding Is My Resignation
At a meeting with House Democrats on Wednesday afternoon, President Barack Obama talked strategy on the debt limit and continuing resolution debates, reiterating his argument that the party had to hold the line against concessions.

The meeting didn't produce major news, though after it was done, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her whip, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), both hinted they could support a short-term extension of the debt limit, which now seems to be the option that House Republicans are pursuing.

Instead, one Congress member at the meeting told The Huffington Post in an email that the most memorable moment was a quip from the president about how unbalanced the GOP's demands were.

"Obama said the Republican ransom list is so long, the only thing it doesn't include is his resignation," the lawmaker said.

This pisses me off even more.
But the House Rules Committee voted the night of Sept. 30 to change that rule for this specific bill. They added language dictating that any motion "may be offered only by the majority Leader or his designee."

So unless House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) wanted the Senate spending bill to come to the floor, it wasn't going to happen. And it didn't.

"I've never seen this rule used. I'm not even sure they were certain we would have found it," a House Democratic aide told TPM. "This was an overabundance of caution on their part. 'We've got to find every single crack in the dam that water can get through and plug it.'"
