It's been said that when Nazis are framed as just people with differing political views, then we are normalizing genocide.

Every day, we move farther away from the horror of World War Two and the Holocaust. Every day a Holocaust survivor passes away. Every Day a WW2 Vet dies.

What happened in Charlotte can happen in any city or town in America, as each day passes we move farther away from the lesson's that Nazi Germany and WW2 told us: "Never Forget'

It seems we are forgetting. I can't help but wonder how many of those people marching under white terrorism banners had a relative who fought in WW2. I can't help but think about how many surviving veterans feel watching the confederate flag waving among swastikas and other White Nationalist symbols. What is amazing to me is that the Confederate flag was almost, almost, the most benign symbol displayed over the weekend. People will still try to claim that this was about southern heritage.

We can have an endless debate over "states' rights" as the root of the Civil War; I find it pointless because it is nothing more than a convenient narrative to avoid the truth. These men were fighting against the notion that all men and women—not just the white men in power, and the women who stood beside them—deserve the life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for which our forefathers fought in the late 18th century. They wanted to continue the practice of enslaving black men and women, of protecting whiteness. I will never see a Confederate flag or monument and separate it from a history of white supremacy, no matter how often I was instructed by our biased history lessons to ignore it. (snip)

To my fellow Virginians and Southerners who have stood so steadfast in their refusal to see our Confederate monuments for what they are, I ask you: What does this say about our heritage? These men and women are not protesting the elimination of Southern culture and history, but rather reacting to their own deluded notions that white people are losing control of our country. When a group of men and women shout out "Jew will not replace us" in front of a statue of Robert E. Lee, what does that say about your symbol of Southern heritage? When these people brandish Nazi symbols and scream "fuck you faggots" in front of your idol, what does it say about a historical figure who supposedly stood up against a tyrannical government to protect his land?

The South lost the war. Over a century later, we're still fighting one—but it has nothing to do with states' rights or Southern pride. It is about racism, intolerance, and hatred. And at the center of it all are symbols that, despite the well-intended Southern narratives that have failed to reframe them as anything else, are the strongest representation of racism in our country's history.


Let me switch that last paragraph up a bit. The Nazis and the fascists lost the war. Some 72 years later we are still fighting them. 'It is about racism, intolerance, and hatred. And at the center of it all are symbols that, despite the well-intended Southern white supremacy narratives that have failed to reframe them as anything else, are the strongest representation of racism in our country's history.

We are failing those who risked and lost lives to stop the Nazis because a small group of very vocal, violent and hate-filled white people (generally men) believe they are more supreme than you and I. We are failing 'The Greatest Generation'.

This is who we are in the USA today. It's time to change that. the Holocaust was not normal. Genocide is not normal. This is not about a differing political point of view. These are people who, given the chance will kill those they deem inferior. This weekend they succeed by killing one person.

It needs to change. The White House won't do it, but somebody has to be the change.

There is talk that the Nazi rally in Boston may not happen. It turns out that the 23-year-old Hitlerite vermin that organized it has only just applied for a city permit, and it may not be approved.

A benign cosplay group already has a permit at the same time and place for their annual family picnic.

We'll see.

Apropos of today's blog.
Because I am old, now 94, I recognise these omens of doom. Chilling signs are everywhere, perhaps the biggest being that the US allows itself to be led by Donald Trump, a man deficient in honour, wisdom and just simple human kindness. It is as foolish for Americans to believe that their generals will save them from Trump as it was for liberal Germans to believe the military would protect the nation from Hitler’s excesses.
