We're Still Contagious
Author: BobR    Date: 06/10/2020 13:14:46

It's been a rough 3 months in the U.S. as we went from a few hundred to a few thousand to holy-shit-this-is-getting-out-of-hand in the number of COVID-19 cases. We were all told to do 3 things: Wear a mask, social distance, and wash our hands. As a result, the number of new cases began to level off and actually drop.

Another casualty of the pandemic was the economy and employment. As non-essential businesses went into hibernation mode (and white collar jobs went to a work-from-home model), layoffs and hiatus dropped the cash flow in and out of wallets and businesses to a fraction of their former levels. Economists are now able to report that we've entered a recession.

The combination of these two things has caused a number of states to "reopen" probably sooner than they should, and a certain segment of society (*cough*MAGAts*cough*) to ignore the initial warnings that helped level off and decrease new cases.

The effect of this is as expected.

Arizona, for example, is seeing the number of new cases start rising again. North Carolina is breaking previous records for number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19. Other states are seeing an uptick in new cases.

It's still too early to determine how many new cases are going to come from the protests around the country after the murder of George Floyd by the police in Minneapolis. There are definitely new cases here in DC among the DC National Guard:
Members of the D.C. National Guard have tested positive for COVID-19 in the wake of the mass protests across the nation’s capital last week, according to Lt. Col. Brooke Davis, Guard spokeswoman.

[...]

While some Guard troops responding to the protests wore protective equipment, most were not wearing masks and it was largely impossible to maintain any social distancing.

In a statement, Davis said unit commanders were responsible for ensuring their troops adhered to guidelines calling for Guard members to wear protective equipment and maintain social distancing where practical.

She said personnel were medically screened for the coronavirus prior to their arrival, and will be screened before they leave.

[...]

According to officials, Guard members returning to their home states may remain on duty status and continue to be paid for two additional weeks so that they can be in quarantine if they were at risk for coronavirus infections.

So in this "controlled" example, the National Guard members didn't social distance and didn't wear masks, and ended up with the virus. It's almost as if the CDC and WHO know what they're talking about!

So for readers in states that are "reopening", a word (or two) of caution: Your state leaders may be more interested in tax revenue than your personal health. It's up to you to protect the latter, since your state's leaders won't.

Wear a mask when out in public. Keep your distance as much as possible. Try to keep your hands clean. You - and the people around you - deserve that.

Not necessarily so, but I'm in a Northeast Coalition state - This probably should have been the national model.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Just don't be Florida.

So another right winger is boycotting Rage Against the Machine because he doesn't like their politics. Like Paul Ryan I have to wonder are any of these people paying attention.

Ya know, I'm not sure if this was widespread knowledge.

I got laid off last week, as trolley revenue continues to erode. I was the newest and lowest of the management team. And there was a trigger event, but suffice to say I care little about what Florida conservatives see me posting online - even if that Florida conservative signs my paycheck.

In any case - I sniffed around briefly, and have two strong leads, both driving.

I'm going Friday to have a check-ride with the Veteran's Administration, for driving a paratransit van. The other lead is driving a School Bus near my hometown; with a potential to immediately get into training, and summers off, so I can potentially go and be on summer camp staff.

And I could maybe go back to trolleys, too - but I'm not entirely convinced that's going to be profitable again for a year or 18 months. Phase 3 re-opening is still June 29, there may be drivers recalled starting on or about June 21.

So some FL conservative owns the Old Town Trolley line? WTF? We have those here in DC too.
