No, it's not a sale.

Good morning.

February is winding to a close, and with it, hopefully the end of what our friends in the auto business consider their "peak" season. Hell, perhaps you've even bought one.

Most TV commercials are things I can tune out and pretend don't exist. Rare is the one that annoys me or causes me to have some sort of editorial comment. I don't pretend to know the advertising market, but maybe you've seen the trippy dancing avocado singing about toast and breakfast recently? Dear Avocado Guys: this isn't really going to improve my opinion of what is essentially wood putty, but I digress.

But this isn't about that. Today is February 22, which is George Washington's actual birthday. I have vague remembrance of there being two presidential birthdays celebrated in this month; George today and Mr. Lincoln back about February 12. A quick search of the internets yields a couple of tidbits about this. First is the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which was signed into law in 1968...this did what it said, and Washington's Birthday was formalized on the third Monday of February.

The more telling tidbit is a line from the article about Washington's Birthday...

By the mid-1980s, with a push from advertisers, the term "Presidents' Day" began its public appearance.

I suspect this transition is what I remember - through my primary school years, we would have celebrated "Washington's Birthday" in the way only grade-school kids can.

All of this finally leads to my irritation today. I'm assuming you've seen the Honda ad this year with the Presidential Bobbleheads? In a nutshell...George and Abe are arguing over what day it is....and Teddy shows up and proudly states "It's not a day; It's a SALE!"

I don't know what it is; this just really pisses me off this year. Maybe if it was Ford or Chevy with this ad? But who knows.

(And here's a tip - this is actually the worst time to buy a car. I know how sales work; something will be marked down or deeply discounted because it doesn't sell - the price is only a ruse to get you in the door. The things you want are never on sale.)
