Good morning.
The Divided States of America are growing stronger every day. We're certainly no longer an "is", as the Civil War once previously decided.
It all comes down to the most basic things of all. Thomas Jefferson wrote of it at the very beginning. Why did the colonials do what they did?
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.Point-by-point...obviously TriSec is alive as I sit here. But given the way society is, and what I do for a living, that could be terminated at any time. I'm going to the supermarket this morning. Although I live in Massachusetts, there's a 50/50 chance I could get shot there. I ride a motorcycle, which is the most hazardous mode of travel, especially here in Boston, which has the fourth-worst traffic in the world. Law enforcement and compliance with traffic laws in this city is completely non-existent. Plus I'm a cancer survivor, but remaining in good health.
Liberty? I'll let our friends at Merriam-Webster define this one for me today.
1
: the quality or state of being free:
a
: the power to do as one pleases
b
: freedom from physical restraint
c
: freedom from arbitrary or despotic (see DESPOT sense 1) control
d
: the positive enjoyment of various social, political, or economic rights and privileges
e
: the power of choice
In this, the Divided States are a complete failure. There is no Liberty; especially if you are a woman in a religious-controlled state. Which is also contrary to the very first point of the rules we all use to govern ourselves. It didn't happen overnight, but it's certainly a "frog in the pot" evolution. Rights have been relentlessly and continually eroded by powerful and despotic forces. The People, from whom those just powers are derived, have remained ignorant and silent, and now it is too late.
Pursuing happiness is certainly more nebulous. But in our hedonistic, capitalist society, that seems to be all we focus on. Do you have the latest electronics? A fancy car? A nice house? Well actually, no. Only the elites and connected can afford these things now. The Government goes out of its way to preserve, protect, and defend those that can throw giant buckets of cash at the same politicians that no longer answer to the people, and instead only perpetuate the debased society that they themselves have created.
Can we save it?
Well, we can - but we've got to look back to the streets of Boston in the 1770s. Violence, demonstrations, massacre...that's going to be the only way to rally the people. I'm afraid the words of Thomas Jefferson will once again be relevant -
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
