Rocking the House
Author: BobR    Date: 04/12/2018 12:54:46

The announcement yesterday that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) is not running for re-election has fueled speculation and fears about future control of the House. Ryan's most likely successors are Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Steve Scalise (R-LA), which is not necessarily an improvement (unless they are inclined to stand up to tRump).

His purported reasons for leaving the public sector is to "spend more time with his family", which is about the most cliché a reason there is. There are other potential reasons: He doesn't want to lose the election and go out a loser, he's worried that he'll get swept up in the Mueller investigation, he's having trouble getting donations for a re-election campaign, or he doesn't want to be in Congress if the Republicans lose control of it.

How likely is that last possibility, really? Actually - it seems within grasp.

Good Morning.

While America remains at war this morning, it's unclear whether there are external enemies, neighbors, or if we remain at war with ourselves.

Much has been made recently about Mr. Trump's plan to send troops to the Mexican border. This almost has the feel of a setup for a new Gleiwitz Incident. I almost expect something to happen soon.

For the Public Good

Good Morning.

Last Tuesday, I spent most of my day hanging around the Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn, MA. I was called for jury duty, and like a good citizen I made my way to the courthouse to do my civic duty.

In the pool waiting room, there was an extensive display about past cases and legal precedent, and I was able to kill about an hour of the long day looking over some local historical cases that had repercussions for the rest of the United States.

Schooling the Teachers
Author: BobR    Date: 04/05/2018 14:14:12

Yesterday, the last wounded victim of the Parkland school shooting left the hospital to go home. He has been lauded as a hero for using his body to block a door, likely saving many of his classmates' lives, and inccuring 5 bullet wounds in the process. He is an immigrant from Venezuela.

Back in Dec 2012, the Sandy Hook school shooting horrified a nation. Twenty children and six school employees were killed. Of those staffers killed, some were protecting the children and lost their own lives doing so.

In between these events, as well as since the Parkland shoot, there have been discussions about how to protect the children in our schools. Various ideas, such as clear backpacks, armed guards, metal detectors, and even arming teachers and staff have been tossed around. All but the first idea would cost money - in some cases a substantial amount. We want our teachers to teach our kids the basics, not teach them controversal topics, and protect them with their lives. What we apparently don't want to do is pay them a living wage.

Good Morning.

Just a brief entry today - I'm off to Jury Duty this morning, and I am unfortunately expecting to find a very low or even flat tyre on my vessel this morning, so I've got work to do.
