A Rant
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/29/2016 03:00:44

Good Morning.

We interrupt today's scheduled "Ask a Vet" for a local news rant.

Perhaps you've heard recently that a liberal-arts college in Western Mass has decided to stop flying the American flag on campus?

The Brand is Crisis
Author: Raine    Date: 11/28/2016 14:10:48

From the Philadelphia Inquirer, last night.
One of my heroes in journalism, the late 20th Century muckraker I.F. Stone, is most famous for his dictum that all governments lie. Sadly, that's been true -- albeit in wildly varying degrees -- with all the U.S. presidents of my lifetime. The list includes Republicans like George W. Bush (the Iraq war, the African uranium caper) and Richard Nixon (pretty much everything) and Democrats like LBJ (Vietnam) and, yes, even the relatively scandal-free Barack Obama ("If you like your health insurance, you can keep it," even after evidence emerged to the contrary, and his promise of "the most transparent government"...not even close.) But none dared to launch what a certain German minister of propaganda (today you might call him a "chief strategist") once called The Big Lie -- a falsehood so outrageous and so without basis that it's almost futile to contradict in any conventional way.

But Donald Trump went there. Armed with his iPhone and his two thumbs, the president-elect -- who takes the oath of office in 54 days -- experienced a Twitter meltdown earlier this afternoon, and ultimately told a shocking Big Lie to the nation he plans to lead.

The lie? Here you go:

Felt the need to have a little fluffy today, just to decompress a bit.

Business as Usual
Author: BobR    Date: 11/23/2016 14:03:49

It's now been 2 weeks since the 2nd Day That Will Live In Infamy, and it might already be time to see if any tRump voters are having buyer's remorse. During the campaign, he made a lot of promises that ranged from stupid to unconstitutional to horrific. While most of the coverage of the pResident-elect has been about his Cabinet picks, there has also been a slow news drip regarding the campaign promises he has steadily been walking back.

On of his promises was to root out corruption in DC and "drain the swamp". This one resonated particularly well with voters who see government as one big organized crime ring (this writer disagrees with that assessment). His choices for cabinet picks and advisors immediately belies that ideal. It makes sense, because he is really going to need people who understand government and how it works, since he is clueless in that regard. In addition, while he was campaigning, he registered 8 companies in Saudi Arabia that will be doing business there while he is president:

Ask a Vet
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/22/2016 10:46:25

Good Morning.

We'll start today we're we've all been recently - in Washington, DC. Among the many names floated for a possible Trump cabinet place are two from Massachusetts. Mitt Romney is no prize, but compared to Giuliani or Bolton - I'll gladly take him as Secretary of State. While he'd have to push Trump's policy around the world, at least he would be civil and proper - and that does go a long way in negotiations, even if you're arguing about dog poo.

The other is our erstwhile Senator Scott Brown, possibly as the Secretary of Veteran's Affairs. Surprisingly enough - we at AAV would not have a problem with this. While you know my feelings towards him as a Senator, I constantly harangued his office during his tenure about Veteran's issues. I never once felt that these concerns went unlistened to - and I received some positive responses from his office staff during those days. Mr. Brown is a veteran himself, although as a peacetime warrior he never fired a shot in anger. Nevertheless - he's not the worst choice.

About last night.
Author: Raine    Date: 11/21/2016 14:08:19

Good Morning.

This weekend we went to a friend's annual Friendsgiving party. We look forward to it every year as it gives us a chance to spend time with friends that usually leave town to visit family. Most of the people we see know where Bob and I stand on many issues, yet we don't normally talk about them at a social gathering like this. It's usually about friends, kids, beer and life in general. These people are fellow home brewers and a wider circle of friends that has grown since we moved to this area 8 years ago -- almost to the day. They are people who work in the private sector, they are contractors and some work in the federal government. Our friends are regular people who happen to live inside the beltway but make no mistake, there is no bubble. They live here, work here and raise families here. They don't generally marinate in this stuff the way we do here on this blog.
