The Myths of Planned Parenthood
Author: BobR    Date: 09/30/2015 13:25:58

Terms like "McCarthy-esque" and "witch hunts" get bandied about quite often when Congress decides to pursue a perceived wrongdoing, and proceeds with much pomp and circumstance, and very little substance. It usually involves some idea that is ideologically polarizing, but not really a threat to typical Americans. The labels get used so much they have begun to lose some of their meaning... which is a shame, because yesterday that is exactly what happened to Planned Parenthood in general, and Cecile Richards in particular.

Abortion has always been one of those issues that sets off some primal scream in the brains of certain conservatives, and it is so loud that no facts, nor common sense, nor Constitutional protections are enough to get through to them. The hearing yesterday was not meant to be a "hearing", as they were much more interested in talking than in hearing the responses by Cecile Richards. The whole reason for the kangaroo court was to bury Planned Parenthood.

Good Morning.

We're headed out for a day at camp pretty soon...it's the first trip of the year for Olde Troop 248 in Waltham. We can't stay for the weekend, so a day trip is at least partially beneficial.

Fluffy Friday

The best laid plans of mice and men go awry, as some would say. I have a half written blog at home on the laptop and it seems I've hit a writers block - very frustrating. *sigh*

So I defer to the cute - and while I have it on the good authority from Australians that grown koala's are assholes - baby koala's are adorable.

Pope and Circumstance
Author: BobR    Date: 09/23/2015 13:18:39

America is all abuzz about the Pope visiting our country. He will be here in DC the next two days, then off to NYC and other destinations. Throughout history, the various leaders of the Catholic church have hewn to somewhat differing doctrines. Some were more Old Testament with strict punishments, and others were more New Testament pushing for forgiveness and Good Works. Regardless of their preferred philosophy, their word has always been considered directly from God Himself.

In recent years, more enlightened Catholics have decided that some of the church's tenets (particularly regarding birth control) are stuck in a past that ignores the realities of our modern world. The infallibility of the papacy is no longer sacrosanct. Nonetheless, the pope is still revered by millions, and generally given a modicum of respect by even non-Catholics. The latest pope, however, seems to have pushed some buttons that have unleashed a level of hostility rarely seen.
