A Basketfull of Deplorables
Author: BobR    Date: 09/14/2016 13:18:27

Ever since I heard the phrase "Basket of Deplorables", I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. I thought it should be the name of a book. So - with apologies to Edward Gorey and "The Gashlycrumb Tinies", here is my rendition of "A Basketful of Deplorables"...

Good Morning.

We're going to stay with military equipment this week. As it was reported here last week, the US Navy is having some problems with one of their new ships. (OK, four of them.) News came down a couple of days ago that the entire lead class is being withdrawn from service to become "non-deploying test ships". Call it what you want - I'll call it $1.4 billion down the hole.

Double Standard?

Here is a video from 2010, of Senator John McCain holding a hearing with then-General David Petraeus. You can fast forward to the 2:12 minute mark.

To Duck or Not to Duck
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/11/2016 16:57:01

It's the 15th Anniversary of a horrible day. I refuse to soak in the news of it; instead I'd rather remember those that lost their lives by just living a better life and doing what I can to help others.

It's just a house.

My mother is going home today.

She's been in-hospital, and then in rehab, for the last 3 weeks. Her situation is much improved, but it's really just the next stage in the long journey. Chronic, progressive diseases generally only end one way.

Home is a 1950s Cape at 31 Forest Street, Saugus MA (01906). I'll pause for a second while you look up Google Street View.

Fluffy Friday

Don't know how many of you have heard of The Hillywood Show, they do parodies of pop culture shows and movies. They are so good at it in fact that they have have been approved by many of the shows they parody.

I thought on this Friday, to get our minds off the the honorific tire fire that is the campaign of Don the Con, I'd post a couple here.

Wednesday Science Stack
Author: BobR    Date: 09/07/2016 14:00:44

Yes, FOX "News" is melting down. Yes, the tRump campaign is circling the bowl. Yes, he held a fundraiser for the prosecutor who dropped his case. But today, we take a break from presidential campaign politics to revisit an old friend - the Science Stack. It's been quite a while since we perused the myriad interesting science-related stories out there. So let's feed our minds for one day before we wallow in the mud.

First up: The Juno Jupiter probe. The Juno probe was launched 5 years ago with the goal of giving us a better understanding of the largest planet in our solar system. It has completed a few orbits, and sent back the first pictures of Jupiter's north pole (which is not visible from earth). It was not what scientists expected:

Good Morning.

I hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend.

As a product of hopefully American Labor, let's take a look at a couple of equipment and gear stories today. Of course, we'll start with my favourite whipping post, the "Flying Turd". Despite what you may have heard recently about it being combat-ready, there's still evidence to the contrary.
