The changes we see in society are like waves crashing on a beach. The water advances and then retreats. The crash is sudden and the churn obscures the seabed before settling. We have sudden advances in fairness and opportunity that makes people wonder why it was ever any different, while other long-held rights and freedoms we took for granted seem to be slipping away.

Who would have thought that we would advance from acceptance of gays on prime time TV shows to the point of legalizing gay marriage in such a short period of time? Now it seems so normal, one wonders why there was ever any controversy. The same goes for racial and gender equalities. Who'd have thought 20 years ago that America would elect a black president, and could easily elect a woman president as well? Sure there are the Donald Sterlings here and there, but they are dying away, and a younger generation is being raised in a world where the idea that one entire group of people is inferior to one's own simply based on skin color or innate sexual preference is an almost absurd notion.

Good Morning.

I've spent this past vacation week at home - we've done a great many things, which means I've been a little out of touch with the news this week. However, that doesn't mean I haven't been observing things. Being home with an almost 13-year-old means a lot of gaming talk and superhero talk, and we've been at our favorite whipping post...Aquaman!

Now, we all know that he's one of the founders of the Justice League, but after that what more can you add? We were even discussing super-villians, and I could only come up with one against our boy..."Black Manta". But I have many questions about our intrepid Aqua...Does he need to stay moist, or what happens when he dries out? This whole "Communicate with the Fishes" thing...can he talk to saltwater fish only, or freshwater too? What about whales, dolphins, and other such things...they're mammals. Do squids, crabs, lobsters, and snails also answer to Aquaman, or do they speak an entirely different language? This is becoming difficult to grasp now. And the big question, is our friend an air-breather or does he have gills? He must be an air-breather, since he spends an awful lot of time at the Hall of Justice making toast, but I digress.

The last time I felt this way was in the 90's as the so-called Moral Majority was increasing its stranglehold on the country. I remember Waco, Ruby Ridge and the Oklahoma bombing. I did not shed a tear when Timothy McVeigh was silenced forever.
