Had to make a metro run this Morning.
Author: Raine    Date: 05/01/2014 12:52:28

It's lovely when the bus just completely breezes by and fails to pick up the people (as in more than one person) waiting to get on.

Pardon Me
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-04-30 10:41:40

The changes we see in society are like waves crashing on a beach. The water advances and then retreats. The crash is sudden and the churn obscures the seabed before settling. We have sudden advances in fairness and opportunity that makes people wonder why it was ever any different, while other long-held rights and freedoms we took for granted seem to be slipping away.

Who would have thought that we would advance from acceptance of gays on prime time TV shows to the point of legalizing gay marriage in such a short period of time? Now it seems so normal, one wonders why there was ever any controversy. The same goes for racial and gender equalities. Who'd have thought 20 years ago that America would elect a black president, and could easily elect a woman president as well? Sure there are the Donald Sterlings here and there, but they are dying away, and a younger generation is being raised in a world where the idea that one entire group of people is inferior to one's own simply based on skin color or innate sexual preference is an almost absurd notion.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,587th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualties from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,314
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,119

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through:

$ 1, 530, 013, 800, 000 .00

Last week, we spent some time looking at aviation, and I promised more hard-hitting stories this week. Now is the time.

Fracking: whether you want it or not.
Author: Raine    Date: 04/28/2014 12:59:54

North Carolina, you're next! Back in August of last year, this happened:
North Carolina landowners would be forced to sell the natural gas under their homes and farms – whether they want to or not – under a fracking recommendation approved Wednesday that’s expected to be enacted by the state legislature this fall.
It's really not that bad, they are doing it for the benefit of everyone, you see…

While many people continue to applaud our all white Justices in the Supreme Court of the US, like their decisions on the Voting Rights Act - race relations continue to slide on. Mostly downhill.

What's largely different from 1914 to 2014 is that we have audio and video. Oh, am women and blacks feel more empowered thanks to the rights that we did receive. Those rights are slowly dwindling.

Aquaman and other musings
Author: TriSec    Date: 04/26/2014 11:21:16

Good Morning.

I've spent this past vacation week at home - we've done a great many things, which means I've been a little out of touch with the news this week. However, that doesn't mean I haven't been observing things. Being home with an almost 13-year-old means a lot of gaming talk and superhero talk, and we've been at our favorite whipping post...Aquaman!

Now, we all know that he's one of the founders of the Justice League, but after that what more can you add? We were even discussing super-villians, and I could only come up with one against our boy..."Black Manta". But I have many questions about our intrepid Aqua...Does he need to stay moist, or what happens when he dries out? This whole "Communicate with the Fishes" thing...can he talk to saltwater fish only, or freshwater too? What about whales, dolphins, and other such things...they're mammals. Do squids, crabs, lobsters, and snails also answer to Aquaman, or do they speak an entirely different language? This is becoming difficult to grasp now. And the big question, is our friend an air-breather or does he have gills? He must be an air-breather, since he spends an awful lot of time at the Hall of Justice making toast, but I digress.

We have to turn a corner.
Author: Raine    Date: 04/24/2014 13:06:48

The last time I felt this way was in the 90's as the so-called Moral Majority was increasing its stranglehold on the country. I remember Waco, Ruby Ridge and the Oklahoma bombing. I did not shed a tear when Timothy McVeigh was silenced forever.

The Big Chill
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-04-23 10:15:26

As 2014 marches on, it seems like our long national nightmare in the Middle East is finally coming to an end. For young people, it must seem like a paraphrase from "1984": America has always been at war with Terrorism. It isn't the first time that America has been at war with an "ism", however. In the 60s and 70s, America was at war with Communism. That was the boogeyman that was on the verge of destroying The American Way, unless we used our military to strike down communism wherever it showed its face. Thus, we endured a Cuban Missile Crisis, battled in Viet Nam, and conducted a long Cold War against the Soviet Union.

It wasn't until the mid 80s and a change in leadership in the USSR when Perestroika, Glasnost, and the dissolution of the USSR into individual countries brought that Cold War to an end. We began reducing our nuke stockpiles, turning the doomsday clock backwards, and ushering in a technological and consumer renaissance in the U.S. Still - we spied on Russia, and Russia spied on us, and we continued to fight our war via proxies, as Russia and the U.S. inevitably supported opposite sides in various skirmishes around the globe.
