Good Morning.

Today is our 4,482nd day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,302
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,108

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 505, 270, 225, 00

So last week, Secretary Robert Gate's book debuted with a bang. Much was made about his "harsh" criticism of President Obama, but your mileage may vary, as always.

Putting this up there.
Author: Raine    Date: 01/13/2014 14:06:18

Yes another Monday with not much to see. Looks like Mr. Christie is being investigated for his use of Sandy Funds. I'm reading that West Virginia may be lifting the water ban (unsure if that is the most prudent thing to do).

We have a deal with Iran -- this is a really big story that I have been reading about this morning.

Today the Supreme court will be discussing the Presidents Execetive appointments. This is the big one to watch for today.

Another Gift? For Me?!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 01/12/2014 15:40:47

Well I do declare, that Party of Republicans just continues to shower us with gifts! Do they know that the Elephant is one of my favorite animals in the world? Actually, given the choice between having a donkey or an elephant as a pet, the latter would be the clear favorite. 'Course, I'd have to have John Edwards sized home and some hired help.

The big one we missed

Good Morning.

We all like licorice, right? I use oil of anise in a couple of signature cookies around baking season...of course I'm part Italian and Sicilian so I've got a bottle of Sambucca kicking around my liquor cabinet somewhere...curiously though, I don't like black licorice; I prefer the red kind, but I digress.

But suppose you got up one morn, went to brew coffee or brush your teeth, and got some weird blue goo that smelled of elderberries? [poetic license]

A Tangled Web
Author: BobR    Date: 01/10/2014 15:17:31

Much as I'd rather not have yet another blog post about NJ Governor Chris Christie, there were too many juicy tidbits out of yesterday's marathon presser to ignore. The entire transcript is here, for your use, and I will be quoting from it throughout the blog.

The big takeaways are that Christie claims to have no previous knowledge of what happened, claims to be upset, has fired those responsible, and doesn't know who the mayor of Ft. Lee is. Let's take a look at some of these claims, as well as some of the other things he said.

Unfit for Office.
Author: Raine    Date: 01/09/2014 14:08:18

Today is guaranteed to be Chris Christie. He's scheduled an 11 am press conference and we will see what happens then. I said it last night and I will say it again: this particular story pisses me off. Political retribution like this is on par with organized crime.

Worse, it was reckless; lives were put in danger. As reported last night one woman may have died due to the delays in her getting to a hospital.
As Rachel explained on the show last night, this meant a delay for an EMS crew arriving at the scene of a vehicle accident where four people were injured, an hour-long delay for an EMS coordinator to reach someone who called 911 complaining of chest pains, and the elderly woman who died.

Making matters slightly worse, Molly Redden noted there was a missing four-year-old child in Fort Lee that morning and though the toddler was eventually found, local police were initially hampered from responding due to the traffic crisis imposed on the community for no reason.
His administration decided to exact political retribution for not endorsing the Governors re-election campaign. It's Nixonian in nature. Like the Watergate break in -- it could very well be criminal.

Stupid Liars
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-01-08 12:16:41

There's a familiar phrase that goes along the lines of "you're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to your own facts". The best kind of opinion is an informed one, that is - one that is formed based on the best factual information available. The problem is when the opinion comes first, and then when facts can't be found to support it, they are fabricated out of whole cloth. Then one has to decide if the person delivering their opinion as if it were indeed fact are liars or stupid.

Raine's blog post on Monday put the information out there that essentially asked that question. There wasn't sufficient information to state definitively either way, and so she didn't. It appears, though, that he was indeed lying:

We'll take a brief look back at Iraq this morning. If you've been paying attention, you've noticed that places we fought over a decade ago are back in the news. Fallujah was recently overrun by an Al-Qaeda affiliated insurgency group, and the fighting has been as intense as anything we saw after we invaded.

Enough.
Author: Raine    Date: 01/06/2014 17:53:21

Enough of the stupidity.

I know that I have written of the incredulous lies, yes, lies from conservative quarters over the past few years, I know I said I wanted to stop writing about debunking those lies.

I also know that I am but a small person in a sea of lies trying to stop the baloney.

So, it seems anyone can plug in a computer and write stuff. Just like I'm doing now!

But really, the dribble that comes off as news is astounding. Recently this little horror has been making the rounds:
