Welcome to North Caro... *BANG*
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/15/2013 14:35:00

Just 15 more days until North Carolinians can carry guns into all sorts of places. Well, you'll need a Carry and Conceal Weapons permit, but that's not hard at all. Soon you'll swagger into your local bar or playground or golf course or SCHOOL with your loaded gun. Then you can dare anyone to get in your way.... even those annoying small children in line at the Skee Ball at Chuckie Cheese. Little pests....

Repeal THIS! *zip*
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/14/2013 10:56:03

Good morning.

I'm off in a few minutes for another trail-clearing project with the store. Should you be passing by Burlington, MA anytime soon, check out Mary Cummings Park and then come visit The Bean about a half-mile away.)

Let's think about healthcare today. How many of you out there pay your insurance through your employer as a pre-tax deduction? It should be everybody, unless you're a member of a special underclass of American society.

The Art of Giving Up Power, Part Two
Author: Raine    Date: 09/13/2013 13:47:25

For those that listened to the President's speech Tuesday night there was an interesting nugget.
That's my judgment as Commander-in-Chief. But I'm also the President of the world's oldest constitutional democracy. So even though I possess the authority to order military strikes, I believed it was right, in the absence of a direct or imminent threat to our security, to take this debate to Congress. I believe our democracy is stronger when the President acts with the support of Congress. And I believe that America acts more effectively abroad when we stand together.

This is especially true after a decade that put more and more war-making power in the hands of the President, and more and more burdens on the shoulders of our troops, while sidelining the people's representatives from the critical decisions about when we use force.

Never Forget
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-09-12 11:29:30

Just over a week ago, we celebrated Labor Day with a 3-day weekend, cookouts, and maybe one last trip to the beach or maybe the neighborhood swimming pool. The day before yesterday, the president spoke about Syria. Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of 9/11. What could these things possibly have in common?

I'll Often Stop and Think About Them
Author: Raine    Date: 09/11/2013 13:14:59

I miss them. I miss those glorious towers. I miss seeing the sun shine in between them. I miss seeing them glitter at night over a downtown neighborhood that closed after dark. I miss using them to guide me thru the streets of the city. It didn't matter where I was or what time of day it was, I could look up and be guided by it.

I miss the days I worked in NYC and came up out of Penn Station and saw the Twin Towers. Now that I think about it, I miss the days we called them the Twin Towers. To this day, my heart leaps when I see them in a movie or TV show. I no longer look at them with sadness. but with gratitude of having the experience of seeing them. They were a part of my life. It took a long time, and I am not closed off to the sadness of that day, but I am at a place where I just miss those towers.

I don't have much more to say. Once again, as it did a few years ago, this song comes to mind.

Ask a Vet Dump
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/10/2013 10:26:04

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,356th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,266
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,102

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 471, 264, 650, 000 .00

As you know, I collect stories all week long for this particular blog....from time to time, my cache just gets a bit out of control, so we're diving right in.

Live by the Gun, Die by the Gun
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-09-09 11:50:58

It's been months since the shooting in Sandy Hook. Since then we've had numerous other stories, the latest being the NSA, spying, and Syria. The "guns will keep you safe" nonsense is not as prevalent anymore because the push for common-sense gun control regulations has taken a back seat to other "priorities". But as each day passes, more people die from gunshots.

Good Morning 4F'ers!

We overslept again this morning, which is not cool in so many ways, especially in that we don't want to repeat yesterdays blog with quick news bits. But nonetheless here we are:

I Don't Want This
Author: Raine    Date: 09/06/2013 14:26:02

I am genuinely trying to figure out where I stand on the issue of Syria. I am weighing all of the stories I read, coupling them with the opinions of people I generally trust.

All I can come up with is that this is a total mess. I don't want our country - the United States - to make things worse. I don't want to know that upwards of 700 people a day are being killed in Syria. I don't want to see more people being forced to leave their homes, their country. I don't want to see the use of chemical weapons and I don't want rape being used as a weapon of war.
