Just over a month ago I wrote a blog about how Germany was starting to shut down fossil-fueled power plants because they were no longer cost-effective, compared to solar and wind. I pointed out all the subsidies and tax breaks that coal and oil get. A new study is showing that we are seeing the same reduction in costs here in the U.S., much sooner than expected:

We can fix this!

Good Morning.

We're off for a busy Saturday in a few minutes. It's "Town Day" here in Waltham, so we'll have a Common full of crafts, food, activities, politicians...and Cub Scout recruiting. Later this afternoon, Javi has a road game, so we'll be travelling to nearby Reading to watch him kick a ball around the pitch.

But before I head for all that, I wanted to take a brief run through a couple of vexing problems facing our nation and the world today. As it turns out, I've been listening to some right-wing talk radio recently, and I accidentally read parts of the Boston Herald earlier this week whilst lining a small mammal's cage with it. But I digress.

Because, Obama
Author: Raine    Date: 09/20/2013 12:58:12

Well they are at it again, Yesterday the house voted to cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by nearly 40 Billion dollars.
Cantor said the deep cuts enacted Thursday were necessary because while most SNAP recipients need the assistance, there are too many people “that choose to abuse the system.”

"Frankly it’s wrong for hard-working middle-class Americans to pay for that," Cantor said.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.), a strong supporter of the bill, said that stiffer work requirements for certain adults applying for SNAP funds mean "you can no longer sit on your couch…and expect the federal taxpayer to feed you."
Republicans are somewhat misrepresenting fraud in the SNAP system. There have been problems but those problems do not warrant a 40 billion dollar gouging. They are lying:

Inside the Beltway
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-09-19 11:01:35

Stereotyping is one of those things that is so easy to recognize in others, and so easy to miss in yourself. It's a shorthand way to dismiss a large group of people based on some shared characteristic by assuming some other shared characteristic. I think about how ignorant this is every time I hear some generalization about "inside the beltway" thinking. For the uninitiated, the "beltway" is I-495 that circles Washington, DC as well as parts of Virginia and Maryland.

Technically, I live inside the beltway, even though I live in Virginia. This part of Virginia is also called NoVa (for northern VA) because it is as different from southern Virginia as DC is. Actually, the part I'm in was once part of the original square of DC before it was returned to Virginia.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (for you youngsters - that's what came before CDs MP3s), the Republicans are once again pretending to be legislators while the country staggers along. Syria and the should-we-or-shouldn't-we debate over bombing to prevent/punish Syria from/for using chemical weapons has once again distracted the public from the very real problems we face.

The Republican-led House has voted to repeal Obamacare too many times to list (I hesitate to provide a number because it could happen again before this is posted, but at least 42). We've have also lurched from budget vote to budget vote, generally pushing through some flawed legislation at literally the 11th hour before the government grinds to a halt. Right now, those drop dead dates are about October 1st when the country runs out of money, and October 15th when the country hits the debt ceiling.
