The Next 50 Years
Author: BobR    Date: 08/29/2013 12:31:31

On a day to day basis (or sometimes even month to month), it is frustrating to see change occur so slowly that it seems we are stagnating. In some cases, extreme reactionary politicians try (and temporarily succeed) in rolling us backward. That's why it's good to sometimes step back and take a look at the big picture to see how far we've come.

This past week in DC, we've done just that. It was 50 years ago yesterday that Martin Luther King Jr made his "I Have A Dream" speech, and this city and the country have been celebrating it. When he gave that speech, Jim Crow laws were still being enforced, mixed-race marriages were still illegal in some states, and the notion of a black president was a pipe dream. Fifty years is a big chunk of lifetime, but to see from whence we've come to where we are now - that is an amazing lifetime to live.

The Dream Continues
Author: BobR    Date: 08/26/2013 13:02:06

This coming Wednesday is the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream Speech" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was one of his most profound and eloquent addresses. This past week here in DC has been a celebration of that moment, the advances made, and workshops to help young people understand the progress, and prepare them to continue it into the future.

Our own Raine and Scoopster attended a reenactment of the march on Saturday (I had a previous engagement that I could not get out of). The advances of our society since Aug 28, 1963 are certainly affirming, most notably a bi-racial president (who is identified as black), elected and re-elected by an obvious majority of voters in this country. People of color are or have held offices such as Attorney General and Secretary of State. Rights for other groups (such as women and LGBT people) have been recognized and legalized through the years.

There is still a lot of progress to be made, however. Voting rights being curtailed by targeted laws, police over-reaction and an often blase response to it, lingering education problems in inner cities are but a few. There is also the problem of mindset, and that is a much tougher nut to crack. Among some quarters (and unfortunately often those in power), there is a growing resistance to change that might help level the playing field for all. This resistance manifests itself in blame.

You've been Trumped
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 08/25/2013 14:09:11

Good morning.

Were you aware that THE DONALD™ as in Trump™ had a University? I was not! I knew he had an several office buildings, a Hotel, Spa, Golf course in Scotland, a Casino which often looses money, a ridiculous television show, a beauty pageant (which some say may be a searching ground for his next wife), and a ton of gaudy rich accessories like yachts, helicopters, limos and homes that could hold football stadiums. But an actual school? Nope, who'd have thunk it?

Unseen Victims
Author: TriSec    Date: 08/24/2013 13:17:11

Good Morning.

I've got a brief story to tell this morning....about one of the remaining victims from the Great Recession.

It's easy to look in the rear-view mirror these days....most of us are a bit better than we were a few years ago, and while the economy isn't great, it's still slowly headed in the right direction in spite of the best (worst?) efforts of congress.

But then there is my friend. He's a bit like me on the job front; he's bounced around a bit, temping here, contracting there....but then he ran out of opportunities. Over a year ago.

All the News that's Fit to Fabricate
Author: BobR    Date: 08/22/2013 12:59:46

The HBO network has become increasingly recognized for their top-notch series. Everybody who watches has a favorite. Personally, I loved "The Wire", "Treme", and "True Blood" (before it devolved into silliness). Others are addicted to "Game of Thrones" or watched "The Sopranos" religiously. One of my current faves is "The Newsroom", which revolves around a Keith Olbermann-esque character who calls it like he sees it. The story arc for this season seems to be how a false story was reported as true, and the character(s) that cut journalistic corners because they wanted to believe the story was true.

The series reflects a lot of the reality of working in a newsroom (or so I've read), and unfortunately this story arc reflects reality as well. We know on some level that various news channels or individual reporters or analysts have their own biases, and so need to keep that in mind when we watch. Still - We all want to believe the news is at least delivering us the pertinent facts. We have seen, however, that this is not always the case.

Hypocritical? No, it's Expected.

I wonder how gun owners feel about this:
The National Rifle Association has rallied gun-owners — and raised tens of millions of dollars — campaigning against the threat of a national database of firearms or their owners.

But in fact, the sort of vast, secret database the NRA often warns of already exists, despite having been assembled largely without the knowledge or consent of gun owners. It is housed in the Virginia offices of the NRA itself. The country’s largest privately held database of current, former, and prospective gun owners is one of the powerful lobby’s secret weapons, expanding its influence well beyond its estimated 3 million members and bolstering its political supremacy.
