Freedom of Speech
Author: BobR    Date: 10/27/2010 11:44:34

There's been a lot of talk recently about "Freedom of Speech". It's been at the forefront of our national self-image since our country was formed. The idea that we have the right to say what we want when we want is something we all cherish, even though we really don't have that right. We can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre. The reality is that what we assume to be freedom of speech isn't what's written in the Constitution. The exact words are:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

A story we've been following for quite some time has been the alarming suicide rate among our returning veterans. While there have been many initiatives, there has been little success in reaching out to our vets, as the numbers continue to increase.

Biting the hand that feeds you.

This morning the Washington Post reports: Companies that received bailout money giving generously to candidates

Yes you read that correctly.
The political action committee formed by the company, which is now largely owned by taxpayers, cut McConnell a $5,000 campaign check in September, a small piece of the $190,000 it donated to campaigns in the past month.

Although GM suspended its contributions while it solicited the government for financial help, it is now back in the game of political giving, increasing donations from its federal PAC steadily over the past few months.

It is not alone: Companies that received federal bailout money, including some that still owe money to the government, are giving to political candidates with vigor. Among companies with PACs, the 23 that received $1 billion or more in federal money through the Troubled Assets Relief Program gave a total of $1.4 million to candidates in September, up from $466,000 the month before.

I am Woman, Hear Me...

...ROAR. In numbers too big to ignore. Or, if you're a GOP a candidate in Oklahoma running for Governor of that state, your rally cry might go: "I am mother, her me whine. With words meant to align".

And so it comes down to this, women may swing the elections of several states.

Some recent poll, don't ask me which one - I don't take note of these silly polls they always talk about. Who does these polls anyway? And how? No one has ever called me! Anyway, some recent poll says that 4 in 10 Obama supporters now oppose him, and, among likely-voter women who previously supported him, more than 60% have changed their minds.

Of course, Obama is not currently running for office, so....

Defcon One

A half century ago this would have been a disaster. Imagine, if you will, dozens of unknown radar contacts crossing over the North Pole and heading for major North American cities.

Meanwhile, off the coasts, detection equipment is picking up numerous missile launches, and Washington DC in particular is in danger of imminent destruction.

The situation is grave. The President has a monumental decision to make; is this a mistake, or the beginning of WWIII?

A nearby aide brings in "the football"...which is the briefcase full of our nuclear attack orders. Another aide brings in "the biscuit", which is the index card with the daily codes to access the material in the football.

Only the biscuit is missing.

*POOF*. Endgame. Russia "wins".

NPR - the new ACORN
Author: BobR    Date: 10/22/2010 12:49:05

Can you imagine the uproar from the Republican community if a news analyst for NPR said he was nervous and worried when he saw Christians at federal buildings (because of Timothy McVeigh) (or abortion clinics for that matter)? The foaming at the mouth outrage, rending of garments and tearing of hair would be biblical (no pun intended). Considering how they went after ACORN, a group dedicated to helping and empowering the helpless and powerless, we can expect the same with NPR. Why? Because they fired a news analyst for saying that seeing Muslims at airports made him nervous and worried.

Je proteste

The overwhelming theme of this year's election (and the previous two) has been "throw the bums out". The huge Republican losses in 2006 and 2008 are predicted this year for the Democrats. It seems that the electorate feels that if they keep replacing their legislators, sooner or later they'll get a set they're happy with. Such is the wave the Tea Party is riding this year. As Eugene Robinson says in his OpEd piece yesterday, that could backfire on them in 2 years if they don't change anything (it's a well written piece btw. Go ahead and read it - I'll wait. Ignore the inflammatory title). The thing is - this "throw the bums out" attitude is nothing new in history (it's what revolutions are made of).

War is many things. It is costly, dangerous, heartbreaking, and sometimes even heroic. While usually the only thing to come from war is destruction and sadness, on occasion it is an incubator for leadership and inspiration. Throughout America's history, soldiers have made the leap into politics, starting with our very first President. Military service is no guarantee of success, however.
