General Romney
Author: BobR    Date: 02/24/2012 13:56:56

For anyone who sat through the Republican presidential debate Wed. night, one would think Mitt Romney saw himself as General Patton himself. The candidate talked tough on Middle East policy, and derided President Obama for nearly everything he's done (or hasn't done) thus far. What sort of experience does Romney have with foreign affairs and/or the military? Except for bank accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, practically nil.

The Conservative Candidates: Liberally misleading.
Author: Raine    Date: 02/23/2012 16:09:06

Ezra Klein's WonkBook takes an in-depth look at what the GOP candidates would do with the deficit. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, all but Ron Paul are running anything close to what one would consider fiscally conservative. From the WonkBook:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Rick Santorum: "...he would reduce spending by over $2 trillion between 2013 and 2021. Unfortunately, his tax cuts would increase debt by more than $6 trillion over the same period. Net impact: $4.5 trillion in new debt, for a debt-to-GDP ratio of 105 percent."

Newt Gingrich:" ...estimates his spending cuts would shave $2.7 trillion off of the debt. But Gingrich would also spend $1.6 trillion dollars financing new private accounts for Social Security. And his tax cuts would cost more than $7 trillion. Net impact: $7 trillion in new debt, for a debt-to-GDP ratio of, wait for it, 114 percent."

Mitt Romney:" ...more difficult to score. He saves $1.2 trillion by block granting Medicaid and cutting the federal workforce. But his new tax plan doesn't have enough detail to say how much it costs. ... estimates that if the plan isn't paid for at all, it will add $2.6 trillion to the deficit, leaving Romney's debt-to-GDP at 96 percent."

Ron Paul: "His cuts to federal spending are incredibly severe, saving $7.5 trillion. ... his tax cuts cost $5.2 trillion. ... his plan to end the Federal Reserve would rack up $400 billion in transition cost ... he cuts the deficit by $2.2 trillion, and brings debt-to-GDP down to 76 percent."

Chasing the Boogeyman
Author: BobR    Date: 02/22/2012 13:53:59

Great literature has always been centered around conflict: Man -vs- Man, Man -vs- Nature, Good -vs- Evil... It makes for an interesting narrative, and the reader is always wondering who will win out, and how. Politicians intrinsically understand this basic function of the human brain to separate people into different groups, and then compare and contrast, and ask "which is better"?

It makes it easier to pick the one side if it is a case of "good -vs- evil". Evil of course is a relative measure, which means that painting an opponent as the worst possible thing makes the choice rather obvious. Sometimes, though, that "worst possible thing" is an idea or combination of ideas, and they are attributed to the opponent in what is commonly known as a "smear".

Ask a Vet
Author: TriSec    Date: 02/21/2012 11:29:46

Good Morning.

Today is our 3,789th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,897
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 995

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 304, 522, 100, 000 .00

Let's dive right in...we'll start this morning on the home front. Even though the economy is showing signs of improvement, and most of the indicators are now headed in the right direction, there's still a subset of the population that the recovery is leaving behind...veterans. Especially returning National Guard and Reserve troops. I almost hate to say it, but war seemed to be a steady job.

Santorum's Truth
Author: Raine    Date: 02/20/2012 14:54:34

It's easy to joke about Santorum and his name. What isn't easy is to listen to is the former senator's rhetoric. It seems to get more pointed as he rises in the polls and popularity around the country. As a matter of fact, it's downright divisive. His rhetoric is getting more emboldened and charged as people learn more about him.

Over the weekend Rick Santorum said the following:
The “president’s agenda” is “not about you,” he said. “It’s not about you. It’s not about your quality of life. It’s not about your job.

“It’s about some phony ideal, some phony theology,” Santorum said to applause from the crowd. “Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology, but no less a theology.”
This is the part of his campaign stump speech that many people have focused on. What is less reported were these comments:
“I was talking about the radical environmentalists,” Santorum said. “That’s why I was talking about energy. This idea that man is here to serve the earth, as opposed to husband its resources and being good stewards of the earth, and I think that is a phony ideal.” ....

“I’ve repeatedly said that I believe the president’s Christian,” the former Pennsylvania senator said. “He says he’s a Christian, but I am talking about his world view and the way he approaches problems in this country. I think they’re different than how most people do in America.”
In other words, according to Mr.Santorum, President Obama puts Earth before man, and for him that is a phony theology.

Stop the INSANITY!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 02/19/2012 14:57:50

No offense to my male friends, and they are many, but could we please, please, have a break? Let's elect some sensible, strong women to run the country (world?). Ya'll can just sit back and catch up on TV, go to NASCAR events, drink beer, watch porn, have a never-ending World of Warcraft game, spend the day in the gym and watch every single college football/basketball game and professional baseball game without missing a single one!

Well gang, this is it.

The decision has been made, papers have been signed, and it's time for your loyal TriSec to move on to bigger and better things.

It's been a great run these past few years, and I've accomplished much....more than I ever dreamed I could do with this role. I've met people, influenced youth, and made a name for myself throughout this city.

Women and the State
Author: BobR    Date: 02/17/2012 13:54:15

"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty" - Wendell Phillips (1811-1884)

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)

The turnout for the 2008 election was fairly large by American standards (Americans are notoriously uncommitted when it comes to actually getting their fat asses up off the barca lounger and lumbering down to the polls). It was a fairly monumental race, with the first real chance for a black man to become president, and the country's economy teetering on the precipice of disaster. For most Americans, it wasn't black and white, but green or red. America chose, and we are heading out of the red, and back into the green.

That race was inspirational, as evidenced by the turnout. The reality, though, is that EVERY year is an election year. The "off year" elections cover everything from local dogcatcher to state House reps and senators, to the occassional US House rep or senator. Unfortunately, people tend to be less motivated, and turnout is much lower. Even every 4 years, though, people are woefully underinformed when it comes to who is running for local office, and what they stand for.

All Your Vagina's Belong to Them - V.5
Author: Raine    Date: 02/16/2012 15:09:01

If you have been watching Rachel Maddow, you already know about the newest draconian law that Virginia just passed -- and is about ready to send to the governor for his signature. If you haven't, allow me to give you a little background. If signed into law, women of Virginia will be required to undergo an ultrasound before getting an abortion. Here's the catch -- it's not an abdominal ultrasound. It will be a transvaginal ultrasound.

From Ms.
The Virginia state House of Delegates voted 63 to 36 to pass a bill requiring that women seeking abortions undergo a transvaginal ultrasound, which requires a probe being inserted into the vagina. Delegate Charniele Herring (D-Alexandria) criticized the bill, saying "We're talking about inside a woman's body. This is the first time, if we pass this bill, that we will be dictating a medical procedure to a physician."
Delegate Herring is absolutely correct. Virginia is now dictating a medical procedure to a physician. This is a perfect example of government intruding into personal lives. It's also a lot more than that. This is not small government -- this is intrusive -- and worse.

I'm fairly sure that Rachel Maddow and others have described this procedure called transvaginal ultrasound, but do you know what it looks like? I'm going to show you. **Warning** The following medical image may be unsettling to some.
