That's Trump, Donald J, where I think the 'J' may stand for "just kidding". Yes, the Donald may grace America by saving us from ourselves. "The country is going to hell in a handbasket" he recently said two minutes ago. (Yes, I know, I overslept again and now I'm writing whilst watching the Sunday morning news shows).

Good Morning!

A lovely day here in the Greater Boston region...and with excursion season in full swing at the store, I'll be heading out to Mill Pond in Burlington to lead a birding and tracking hike this morning.

But it's somewhat bittersweet; I'll be cutting back my hours at the store, and will be focusing on moving off in another direction. Nothing tragic has happened, but Tuesday is my last day at my current day job.

The Debate of Diminishing Returns
Author: BobR    Date: 01/27/2012 13:43:14

I wasted an hour or so of my life last night and watched the umpteenth Republican debate, this time with just the four remaining candidates. There was nothing that stood out among the pandering and bald-face lying. It seemed like more of the same jaw-dropping head-shaking spew that we've seen in previous debates.

Twilight of the Dinosaurs

No tyranny or hatred lasts forever. As deeply as we can be divided as human beings and despite a history written in blood and tears, still we see a road being built to a future of greater tolerance and understanding. Sadly, there are those who stand in the way – seeing others as less than human because of ethnicity, belief or lack thereof, or any of a number of distinctions. They fear the Other, who must be intimidated into submission, ridiculed and often used as an enemy of society. I will turn to the politicians and pundits, whose words too often motivate some to hateful words and acts. I will argue that we have seen some moral progress, as sometimes hateful words face condemnation

Good Morning.

Today is our 3,761st day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,880
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 995

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 295, 255, 675, 000 .00

Among the things that happened this weekend was a primary. Our Velveeta posted about it yesterday morning. I don't think it was as snarky as she intended. Newt is a really rotten guy.

We know about his wives, we know about his getting drummed out of the position of Speaker of the House. We know he shut down the Government because he didn't get a good seat on Air force one. We know he has a strange fascination with that Saul Alinski guy.

We know a lot about Newt. Today, I would like to take a look at just one of the many things he's actually saying.

It's a New(t) Day
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 01/22/2012 15:07:14

Let's face it, Newt Gingrinch nee McPherson will be our next POTUS. He is everything that republicans want in a leader, white (in his case he may have overcompensated), straight, Christian (and thus of high moral character) and he exercises his right to marry in that manly Christian "one man = one woman" kind of way. Sure, he's made mistakes, but can't you forgive him? He is after all, a great leader. His marriage motto: "if at first you don't succeed, try and try and try and try again, then ask your wife for permission to have sex with your mistress".

Newt takes full credit for writing the Contract with America while he was Speaker of the House under that horny President Bill Clinton. Newt also takes credit for convincing Ronnie Reagan to drive to Eastern Europe and knocking down the Berlin Wall, balancing the budget, reforming welfare, capturing OJ Simpson and writing and directing "Top Gun" with Tom Cruise.

The power of an Oath
Author: TriSec    Date: 01/21/2012 12:12:05

Good Morning!

An early Saturday, but I'm not going far; I have a rather rare opening shift at the store today. It's also supposed to snow...so it's probably going to be a madhouse. Too bad we did the spring floorset earlier in the week. (No, really!) Where were you in October when we were stuffed to the gills with winter stuff?

But on to the matters at hand.

Yet Another Debate
Author: BobR    Date: 01/20/2012 13:37:00

Okay - I'll confess right up front: I only watched about 10 minutes of the Republican "debate" last night in South Carolina. I wanted to be able to write about my first-hand reactions, but I couldn't do it. The kicker was when John King - after asking Newt and Paul about 3 things they'd do to help the economy - asked Romney to rebutt a comment just made by Gingrich. That is what a debate is - a controlled discussion where participants provide their various viewpoints and counterpoints on one more subjects:

  1. a discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints: a debate in the Senate on farm price supports.
  2. a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers.

Romney's response? (paraphrasing here): "I'll do that in a minute, but first I want to answer the question you asked them, and then I'd also like to discuss this...."

Of course - King let him run with it. That is not a debate. It is an interview/press conference. There is no control. I've seen in previous debates where candidates would start arguing with each other and the crowd cheering like it's a WWE show. The audiences, too, are disgusting, cheering the most horrendous chest-beating bumper-sticker sound bites with bloodthirsty verve. Again, the WWE metaphor seems particularly apt.

But - I suppose I should post some of the more discussion-worthy points of the debate...
