A week ago, a guman entered an Aurora, CO movie theatre at midnight and unleashed a barrage of death and injury upon the packed room. For most of America, the shock and horror was felt over the next few days. For the approximately 70 people injured, however, their nightmare is only beginning. It is also a perfect example of why the ACA (aka "Obamacare") is so vitally important. The most contested provision of the ACA is the "mandate" that everyone carry insurance. The idea is to cut costs by reducing the amount of "free care" (paid for by tax dollars) that is provided in emergency rooms across the country. Why? Because emergency room care is very expensive. The mandate is there to encourage people who are young and healthy to maintain insurance, and collect a tax penalty to help cover the costs of emergency room care for those that don't.

Tax Gambit

Senate Dems were able to pass a tax package yesterday. It's going to be interesting to see what happens now that it goes to the House. In an unusual move, this bill originated in the Senate. TPM states: Wednesday’s development places the onus of avoiding the full expiration of the Bush tax cuts on House Republicans. They are expected to pass legislation next week to extend all of the Bush tax cuts — but the Senate has already rejected that proposition. That leaves the Senate Democrats’ bill as the only viable vehicle for preventing everyone’s taxes from increasing next year.
Republicans will object to House adoption of the Senate bill on technical grounds. It faces what’s known as a blue-slip problem, because the Constitution requires revenue-raising measures to originate in the House of Representatives. But the blue-slip problem is only an obstacle if House Republicans insist on making it one — and Democrats are confident voters will be receptive to the argument that the GOP is standing in the way of middle-income tax cuts until wealthy Americans get a tax cut too. How did this happen at all? Mitch McConnell got the ball rolling. Continue reading...

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. - U.S. Constitution, 2nd AmendmentThe horrific shooting / mass murder that occurred in Aurora, CO last week has once again reignited the discussion about guns in America. There are some that say "now is not the time" to have this discussion. Every single person that says that is against gun regulations, and knows that having these discussions after a nightmare scenario like this will go against their agenda. One has to wonder what that agenda is based on, and whether they believe any gun regulations are acceptable (for the most part - no).

Still trying to come up with some words this morning. It's strange waking up knowing that it is only me and Bobber in the house. First time in a long time that has happened. Waiting for the NCAA announcement regarding the Penn State scandal. Carry on, I shall return. Continue reading...

Well, it seems I have to apologize for the shootings in Colorado the other day. Not the guy who did it, the "joker" guy. And, despite the fact that this a-hole who called himself the Joker died his hair red which was wrong. According to my nerd friends, everyone knows that the Joker had green hair due to a chemical accident when he jumped into a vat of toxic sludge to escape the Batman during a crime being committed at a chemical plant while he was Jack, aka The Red Hood. Even though the crime itself was just a ruse for the mob to kill Jack, aka The Red Hood. Duh!

Good morning! It's a delightful Saturday morning in these parts, and I'm hopefully going to sit in the sun hard for a good chunk of it. Javi is headed out to Canobie Lake Park for the day...a friend's birthday party is going on up there. It's been a whale of a week, hasn't it?

Despite "conserve" being the root word of "conservative", Republicans have decided that conserving natural resources is a liberal ideal and are therefore against it. They claim there is a "liberal agenda", and that "we" want to take away Americans' right to drive gas guzzling cars and dump millions of tons of CO2 into the air. If them thar socialist countries in Europe are trying to cut down on emissions, then - by God - doing so here would be anti-American, to hear them tell it. So they claim our desire to change the status quo is really just to force an ideology on all Americans. But what is their motivation for maintaining the status quo? They hide behind vague claims of "freedom" and "America" and probably apple pie and Chevrolet. The real reason, of course, is much simpler than that: Money.

It all started innocently enough. Back on Sunday, June 24, I spent an afternoon outside hovering around the grill. There was much meat, a few martinis, and I had just laid in my summer supply of smokes, so I capped the evening with a Victor Sinclair churchill. But....I was sitting their leisurely puffing away, and I felt a little 'off'. Bloated perhaps, like I ate too much. That does happen from time to time, so I didn't think much of it.
