A Specter of Change
Author: BobR    Date: 04/29/2009 12:28:20

The huge news yesterday (in case you were under a rock) was that PA Republican Senator Arlen Specter changed his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat. The change has an enormous symbolic impact, but how much change will it make in the actual passing of legislation? Likely not very much.

Swines....
Author: Raine    Date: 04/27/2009 12:42:26

Is it 100 days yet? This has been part of the media Hype machine as of late. 100 Days. We are not there yet. We won't be until Wednesday. Even when we are there, it doesn't matter because we will have another 100 after that, and after that. CNN's John King is already saying that the Second 100 days will be bigger test for Obama.

Looming in those next 100 days is now a possible Flu Pandemic. The media will be -- and already is -- all over this juicy story. The bottom line, as we all heard yesterday, is to take commons sense steps for flu and cold prevention. While the media was all atwitter about DHS declaring a National Health Emergency, they failed to mention this rather important part of the story

More tough guy talk
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 04/26/2009 14:09:22

What is it with all these tough guys? Why do the weak minded (and I'm being polite here), equate "strength" with being cold, aloof, smug, and must include the bulky appendage of really, really bad one-liners that only sound acceptable on fictional characters in cheesy movies? "You're either with us or against us". "I'll be back". "Bring it on". "Make my day punk". Sheesh. I'm beginning to think George W. maybe always thought he was on a movie set? Just maybe?

As you may recall, Mr. Smirky McSneer, #1 tough guy, "The Dick", pried open his tightly-wound little mouth and spoke at us sideways as he usually does when he has to speak about evil things like gay people, terrorists, peaceniks and liberals.

Wandering the ol' internets
Author: TriSec    Date: 04/25/2009 10:59:43

Good Morning!

A strange Saturday from these parts....I'm heading for the store in a little while. I've got the first shift this morning, and I've never "opened" the store before, so this should be interesting.

Perhaps related to the big picture, perhaps not...you all know I've been working in retail for the past few months, a part-time gig at the famed LL Bean (local branch in Burlington, MA). For the past few months, business could be measured in glacial terms. (as in, "slower than a"). However, in the past 2 weeks or so, business has been picking up rather dramatically. I haven't had a shift culled in a while now, and this week, the store has been screaming for volunteers to take on some extra hours.

It could be temporary, and it's certainly only one store in one area of the country....but the return of shoppers is a good thing for the economy, IMHO.

Speaking of returns, do you know anyone vacationing in Mexico these days? Usually, travelers generally want to return home, and their friends and families often eagerly await them....but maybe not this time.

It started on the West Coast....moved quickly through the heartland, and landed in the East with a bang. Grab a face-mask everyone, as we're all gonna die!!!

UnCheney My Heart
Author: BobR    Date: 04/24/2009 12:41:55

It's got to be tough being a Cheney these days. With the recent release of the torture memos and the impending release of the torture photos, the previous administration's transgressions against the law and humanity are once again under scrutiny - and rightly so. One only need watch 15 seconds of video of Bush trying to formulate a coherent sentence to realize he was just a dupe, and Cheney was the brains behind the operation. There's also the little matter of Cheney's membership in PNAC.

Drip, Drip, Drip....
Author: Raine    Date: 04/23/2009 13:04:44

There has been a lot of hubbub in DC. First we got the release of a few torture memo's, and we were informed that people who followed the law at the time would not be held responsible. It's been a roller coaster. Everyone is upset. Rightfully so. Interestingly, what they are upset about seems to more of a debate than what is actually happening. Are they upset about torture, or are they upset that we didn't torture... it is boggling to the mind.

What I DO know, is that there are a lot of people who are very nervous. They should be. There are the usual cast of characters, Rumsfeld, Condi, Cheney, etc. I also believe that a few Dems are sweating it out too. The bottom line is that a damn has burst. People are coming forward, talking, and leaking information. These memos and information have confirmed that sadly, we were right. The letters, The blogs, the protests were not because we were some left wing loons. We were Right. Torture was done in our name... America's name.

Happy Earth Day
Author: BobR    Date: 04/22/2009 12:27:13

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that today is Earth Day. It was Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin who got Congress to declare April 20th as Earth Day back in 1970. Since then, the environmental movement has grown to include the entire world, and environmental legislation has been enacted to make our planet a cleaner place.

One of the great things about Earth Day is that it can be considered "grass-roots" (no pun intended), rather than government mandated. So every year, people have tried more and more to do what they can to conserve energy, minimize waste, reuse and recycle, and buy products that are organic or "green". As you might expect, this time of year we are inundated with articles helping us do just that.

Good morning.

Today is our 2,225th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from Iraq and Afghanistan, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4274
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03) (the list): 4135
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3813
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3415
Since Obama Inauguration (1/20/09): 46

Other Coalition Troops - Iraq: 318
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 678
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 455
Journalists - Iraq: 139
Contractor Deaths - Iraq: 1264

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$848, 333, 225, 000 .00

(Sharp observers will notice a dramatic uptick from last week. There hasn't been any superweapons developed or huge cost spikes, but rather a format change. Previously, the Cost of War website only listed the cost of Iraq. Starting a few days ago, Afghanistan is now included in that total. - TriSec)
