If you drive a petrol-fueled vehicle, it's been impossible to ignore the price of gasoline creeping up. There are several reasons for this (some obvious; some not so obvious), but to hear Republicans tell it, it's all President Biden's fault. This is nonsense, of course, and for reasons we'll get to in a minute, but in response to these economic experts (who were previously medical experts who "did their own resurch"), let's get some facts together that they cannot refute.

Inflation: Inflation is hitting most sectors of the economy, but gas especially hard. If you want to blame Biden for this, then it's because his efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic were so successful here at home. With people traveling more, going into their work more, and just going out more, the demand for gas has gone way up (as has the demand for other goods). Today, I want to highlight one of my favorite styles of art: Genre. Dutch artists like Jan Vermeer are most closely associated with this style of painting. This art 'depicts aspects of everyday life by portraying ordinary people engaged in common activities. One common definition of a genre scene is that it shows figures to whom no identity can be attached either individually or collectively—thus distinguishing petit genre from history paintings (also called grand genre) and portraits. A work would often be considered as a genre work even if it could be shown that the artist had used a known person—a member of his family, say—as a model.'

Last night, President Joe Biden delivered his first "real" State of the Union address to lighter-than-normal crowd in the U.S. House of Representatives chamber. It seemed there were empty seats due to COVID social distancing, as every occupied seat had a name taped to it. His speech was about what you'd expect - some classic moments, some dull moments, a couple awkward moments (especially transitions). His stammer got the best of him a few times, the worst being when he said "Iranians" instead of "Ukrainians". He definitely put Congress on notice to get to work on his agenda.
