This week, the Supreme court delivered. They delivered big time. The first case took a very big step to stop the decay of abortion rights through TRAP laws (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers). Those laws were ruled unconstitutional. The second ruling upheld a federal statute in place that said people convicted of a Domestic Violence misdemeanor do not have a right to own a gun.

Out From Under a Rock
Author: BobR    Date: 06/29/2016 13:03:28

There is a disturbing parallel going on between the U.S. and Great Britain. The rise of Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for president seems to have emboldened those not running for president to vent their Ids in public. The level of crass discourse has skyrocketed to "Idiocracy" levels, as jerks and assholes of every persuasion feel free to drop all pretense of decency. This has been mirrored across "the pond" by a dramatic increase in racist and xenophobic vitriol, based in an angry nationalism.

Ask a Vet

Good Morning.

Well, the budget-cutters are at it again. About 8 years ago now, I was first motivated to run for public office because of some poor budget choices by our then (and still) mayor in this city. As the son and grandson of musicians, she annoyed me by wading into a budget fray with her chainsaw, and the first thing she cut from the school budget was the Fine Arts director.

The city has since come back to its senses, and we now have a thriving art and music curriculum, with the presumed benefits across the board. Our high school show choir was at a national competition in the fall, which they won! and the orchestra travelled to Disney World in April to compete in another event. (they didn't win.)

But...isn't this "Ask a Vet"?

How's the campaign?

Looks like Der Trumpler is having some problems finding "A Few Good Men". I don't suppose many women would even consider this as an option.

Woke up this morning like so many others surprised by the BREXIT vote. The EU is something I've never fully understood. It always felt like countries with deep histories were losing their identity, to me anyway. Established formally in 1992 of 28 countries, its really only 24 years old. With yesterdays vote it seems like people are freaking out. All I know is that Great Britain survived hundreds of years before it and I'm sure even after leaving the EU it will survive well into the future.

I was up until the wee hours in the morning watching a glorious and wonderful thing happening in the House of Representatives... and yesterday, it once again felt like the people's house.

Good Morning.

It's been a thin couple of weeks on the veteran's front, given the sudden focus on domestic issues. Nevertheless, there's a couple of things going on that we can check out. We'll start this morning near China. It seems like that little spat over the Spratly Islands is growing ever larger. One wonders what the next showdown is going to be.
