Hammer and nail, or not
Author: Raine    Date: 05/29/2014 13:15:36

Here’s my bottom line: America must always lead on the world stage. If we don’t, no one else will. The military that you have joined is, and always will be, the backbone of that leadership. But U.S. military action cannot be the only -- or even primary -- component of our leadership in every instance. Just because we have the best hammer does not mean that every problem is a nail.

The Demise of Decency
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-05-28 10:17:04

Common decency in America has gone to meet its maker. There was a time when we respected one another (or at least pretended to), when victims of violent death and their survivors were comforted, where marriage and relationships were accorded a modicum of reverence and empathy. All it takes is one over-privileged, narcissistic psycho with a grudge to flush all that down the crapper.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,615th day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,319
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,120

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through:

$ 1, 537, 097, 125, 000 .00

I've had a couple of short weeks as of late, so I'm afraid our queue of stories has gotten a little short. Nevertheless, we'll still clean out what we have here today.

The Virgin Suicides
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 05/25/2014 15:03:45

Some loser shoots up a campus because, well, he couldn't get laid. See Ladies, this is what happens when you're not slutty enough! "Feminism" is causing men to go crazy and go on shooting sprees. Or, perhaps the problem is one in which a man has such a hatred towards women and refuse to consider them as equals and in doing so cops a bitter resentment that eggs him so much that even therapy cannot cure.

Fentanyl and other sedatives
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/24/2014 11:45:21

Good Morning.

If you worship the ground that the good Dr. Maddow walks upon (as I do), you know that the last 3 weeks she's been leading nearly every night with the story of the horribly failed execution in Oklahoma some weeks ago. The failure has had a chilling effect on the entire 'industry', as no prisoner has been put to death since.

Whether or not you believe in the death penalty, this entire affair has gotten me thinking about the mechanics of the thing. We humans are actually quite easy to kill, and many millions of us have gone to untimely ends over the course of our history.

Now they care? NOW?
Author: Raine    Date: 05/22/2014 13:29:47

Over the past few weeks there has been a somewhat steady drumbeat calling for the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. These issues were first reported last November, but only recently has this particular story gotten coverage. When the American Legion called for his resignation, formally, people started paying attention.

Two Amendments
Author: BobR    Date: 2014-05-21 11:02:33

Of all the rights we have guaranteed in this country - the right to free speech, the right to practice whatever religion we choose (or choose not to practice), the freedom to own a gun, the right to not be forced to incriminate oneself in a court of law - there are a couple rights that aren't spelled out very clearly. Of all the suggestions for Constitutional amendments, there are two that we really need.
