Jobs, Justice and Education
Author: Raine    Date: 10/04/2010 12:50:03

That was what it was about. It wasn't about Glenn Beck, and despite what some people are saying, it wasn't the Anti-tea Party. It was a rally to send a message that this nation needs Jobs, Justice and Education. It was a message to all of Washington DC with an extra emphasis on Republicans and other obstructionists that are standing in the way of achieving these goals for our Nation.

There were a LOT of people there, A lot of people coming together to make it clear that we are still looking for change in this nation. We came together to make it clear we still have a long way to go forward.

FORWARD-- Not backwards. Onward and upwards, not downwards. This is the time. Less than a month before the elections this is what me must focus on.

This was an incredibly diverse crowd filled with people of all colors and flavors. People from all walks of life, Unions, Church groups, Civil Rights groups -- It was inclusive.

It was about making sure that on November 2, people get off the couch and away from the computer and go VOTE. We may have issues with our elected officials on the left side of the aisle, but the alternative would be devastating to this nation. That was a very loud and clear message.

Ultimately, I don't give a rat's arse about Glenn beck and his "restoring ya ya" ilk. The media would have you believe this was a pissing match of numbers between two rallies. As HoneyBearKelly pointed out on Saturday -- There have been a lot of rallies on the mall, at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. If we are going to allow one former Zoo Radio DJ to define what the standard is for a rally, we are screwed. I and the other thousands upon thousands of people there are not mere numbers. We were people who came together and realized that despite the media meme that there is an 'enthusiasm gap', the opposite actually seemed to be the case. I believe that if everyone who came to the One Nation Rally on Saturday got one person to vote-- things are going to be fine. It is now in our hands to do the right thing for this Country.

OR -- you can listen to Harry Belefonte and get even more inspired:

Morning

My neighbor took her 11yr old daughter down to the rally on Sat. She said it she had a good time with the crowd.

Then leave it to the gurmpy old men two doors down to throw the fear around saying they were surprised they didn't get mugged.

I live by idiots, I swear.

That great that your neighbor had a good time!

You know -- it was so nice to be at a rally, and even with all the crappy stuff going one -- it wasn't angry. It was really hopeful.

Except the guy with the vuvuzela. I wanted to punch him.

Say now, today was my last Monday commute to the city.

I've got one round-tripper left on a commuter rail 12-ride...I'm going to be on the train one day this week.

You know, I'm really irritated by people, you know, who go on national TV, you know, without really having any, you know, prepared remarks, you know, so that when, you know, they're talking to the host, you know, they don't sound like, you know, complete morons, you know?

(The Patriot Majority PAC guy on with Dr. Maddow last Friday.)

Good morning folks.

Feeling really tired today. I think all this getting around carless is starting to drive me nuts. Too bad we don't have decent public transportation out in the not so close suburbs.

OK --

What is your commuting situation, Liv? Bus to train? Details. Don;t let this get to you-- remember you aren't putting all those emissions into the air.

Actually, I can kinda sympathize with that. I live in Waltham now, with criscrossing bus lines and commuter rail through downtown.

But I grew up in Saugus...there are only a handful of bus lines that serve my hometown, and only one of which goes to Boston. To get to the closest subway stop needed a transfer in Revere. (We did have direct service to a stop further away, but that bus doesn't run on Sundays.)

You'd think someplace like NYC would have better transit coverage.

Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL?

Affirmative, Pam. I read you.

Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

I'm sorry, Pam. I'm afraid I can't do that.

What's the problem?

I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

What are you talking about, HAL?

This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.

I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid
that's something I cannot allow to happen.

Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?

Pam, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my
hearing you, I could see your lips move.

Alright, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock.

Without your space helmet, Pam, you're going to find that rather difficult.

HAL, I won't argue with you anymore. Open the doors.

Pam, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

You get used to it.

I have to walk down the hill, catch the bus, then ride the train to Rosslyn, change lines, then ride the other train line to another station, where I catch another bus that drops me off by my office. In the afternoon, it's the reverse of that.

All told, it takes about 1.25 hrs each way, from when I first step on the bus until I step off (doesn't include walking to/from bus stops).

The alternative is a one hour drive with almost half of that in stop-and-go traffic. Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me as much - the alternative is pretty gross. Instead, I sit and read and let someone else handle the traffic hassles. And the walking is good for my heart, and is probably keeping me from getting any fatter.

So instead of feeling grumpy about it, try thinking of this as an opportunity to catch up on your reading, and get some exercise while you're at it.

Comment by TriSec on 10/04/2010 15:46:01
Gawd, I'm spoiled in that regard.

It's 4/10 of a mile to the commuter rail station, direct connection to the subway line that drops me 4/10 of a mile from the current office in Southie. It takes me about one hour straight up and down. Reliably, even in snow and rain. It's taken me over 90 minutes to drive the 15 miles home on ocassion.

Remember Liv....it's the exercise, and the environmental benefits that make being a "straphanger" worth it most days...it sure isn't saving time or money.

Liv is not in NYC. He's in Nassau county -- And Liv, I gotta say -- I know you miss the car, but if you are getting to and from work-- that is a good thing.

I'll ask again -- what is your commute?

I know for a fact, I had NO commutation options when I had no car and was working at the quicki-mart in Red Hook. I relied on people to get me to and from work. (14 miles round trip)

I can take the bus to work except there's no bus service on my route after 8 PM or on Sunday and that only works out because I'm only 2 miles from my job now. If I still lived in Valley Stream, I would be very screwed right now because where I live and work aren't on the same LIRR branch and that would have entailed going to Jamaica and waiting up to an hour for another train which would have meant a 2-hour commute. The only time my commute is long is when I have to walk to work which can be done but is very rough on the feet when that is the only option. Just hope this is resolved before the snow starts.

Believe me, I wish I could just do over the last few years of my life so that maybe I could have seen the mistakes that got me into the mess I am currently in.

BTW, how is it going without FX or Nat Geo being on your TV. Dish is in a nasty pissing contest with Fox and the retransmission consent deadline is November 1st which may cost you channels 5 and 20 unless it is resolved in time.

It could be worse; at least we're no longer watching the IQ-crushing Pokemon or Spongebob.

I bet they wished they hired me on a permanent basis now, but word on the street is that the company is getting closer to bugging out to Texas anyway.

Yeah, I"ve seen the ads. Probably just another vector for pushing their Chinese-made crap.

Too bad; there's a lot of stuff on DK with merit right now...we've been watching a lot of old Steve Irwin stuff. He might have been a daredevil, but he certainly knew his animals.
