All the News that's Fit to Fabricate
Author: BobR    Date: 08/22/2013 12:59:46

The HBO network has become increasingly recognized for their top-notch series. Everybody who watches has a favorite. Personally, I loved "The Wire", "Treme", and "True Blood" (before it devolved into silliness). Others are addicted to "Game of Thrones" or watched "The Sopranos" religiously. One of my current faves is "The Newsroom", which revolves around a Keith Olbermann-esque character who calls it like he sees it. The story arc for this season seems to be how a false story was reported as true, and the character(s) that cut journalistic corners because they wanted to believe the story was true.

The series reflects a lot of the reality of working in a newsroom (or so I've read), and unfortunately this story arc reflects reality as well. We know on some level that various news channels or individual reporters or analysts have their own biases, and so need to keep that in mind when we watch. Still - We all want to believe the news is at least delivering us the pertinent facts. We have seen, however, that this is not always the case.

Hypocritical? No, it's Expected.

I wonder how gun owners feel about this:
The National Rifle Association has rallied gun-owners — and raised tens of millions of dollars — campaigning against the threat of a national database of firearms or their owners.

But in fact, the sort of vast, secret database the NRA often warns of already exists, despite having been assembled largely without the knowledge or consent of gun owners. It is housed in the Virginia offices of the NRA itself. The country’s largest privately held database of current, former, and prospective gun owners is one of the powerful lobby’s secret weapons, expanding its influence well beyond its estimated 3 million members and bolstering its political supremacy.

Lean Green Energy Producing Machine
Author: BobR    Date: 08/19/2013 12:59:50

When it comes to environmental "issues", the lines seem to be pretty clearly drawn. The Republicans are pro-oil (and coal) and the Democrats are pro-renewables. Both parties are against their opposites (who can forget Sarah Palin's "Drill baby, drill!"). Do the parties positions reflect their voting members' positions? Does the Republican party's claim of prohibitive cost for solar and wind hold water? The answer is no to both.

It seems the lines got drawn back in 1980. President Richard Nixon was the last Republican to take action to protect the environment, creating the EPA. President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House roof as a token gesture to promote clean energy. When President Ronald Reagan took office, he promptly had them removed. The ridiculing of "tree-huggers" who promote renewable energy has been a Republican meme ever since.

Good Morning.

We're going to do a little traveling this morning. Our first stop is Cloud-Cuckoo land, or maybe North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, or many more states that are interested in superseding constitutional rights.

Mistakes Were Made - Everyone Freak Out!
Author: Raine    Date: 2013-08-17 20:00:00

This morning, The Washington Post had this article on its front page: NSA broke privacy rules thousands of times per year, audit finds

It's not good. Documents that were stolen by Edward Snowden were leaked to WaPo, and were rightfully analyzed. Is what Snowden leaked proof that the NSA is a rogue agency that needs to be dismantled?

Let's start with the WaPo article in all of its depressing glory. Mistakes were made - this we know. But let's dissect a few things.

The Arab Summer
Author: BobR    Date: 08/15/2013 16:02:12

The latest news out of Egypt is troubling and creating conflict in the minds of Americans and others around the world. Egypt was part of the so-called "Arab Spring" in 2011 where the people rose up in country after country along the north African coast and Middle East, deposing their despotic governments in the hopes of creating a new dawn of democracy and freedom. Egypt seemed to be the model of success. After weeks of largely peaceful protests, the military ousted Mubarek and took over the country. They helped provide stability while a new constitution was forged and elections held.

The problem is that the majority of voters selected Morsi, a member of the infamous Muslim Brotherhood (an organization about which most Americans believe many things which are mostly untrue). Despite misgivings, Egypt forged ahead...

... for 1 year. During that time, Morsi behaved like a kid in a candy store, imposing rather harsh rule and putting his religious buddies in charge of key positions within the government. The people revolted once again, and once again the military ousted the president. This time, however, they removed a democratically-elected president favored by a slim majority of the people, most of whom tend towards the angry and emotional, some of whom are al-Qaeda operatives, ready for a fight. This could rationally be called a "military coup", although the U.S. is loathe to call it that.
